Hello Monster is a local San Francisco based band that achieves a unique blend of hard rock mixed with modern melodies and sonic textures. The band mates met under random musical circumstances and have since followed the path which fate has presented before them. Hello Monster began playing in 2007 after several exchanges of glances, emails, musical interests, and Craigslist emails, centering around a tiny South San Francisco rehearsal space. Each member was interested in trying some new ideas of blending alternative rock, for lack of a better term, mixed with accessible/palatable yet dark melodies and harmonies.
The pure focus of the band is composition and performance. It is clear that this band values performance over perfection, and fun over followings and all without compromising the integrity of the music. The local fanbase and gigs are steadily growing and the band is always very receptive to new fans and hearing their input. The songs primarily showcase the band's musical ideas rather than merely just musical talents. Each member adds something unique to the sound to support and drive the direction and emotion of the song. Different ideas are brought forth by members of the band and then dissected, arranged, rearranged, cut, re-lengthened, and generally argued over during rehearsal until something resembling a song pops out the other end.
The band views itself as a single unit, a phalanx if you will, and not just a collection of individual musicians. Songcraft is the driving force of expression with Hello Monster and after seeing their live shows, one can see why. They bring an energy and passion to the stage with their music that leaves the audience wondering "just what kind of band was that"?...
But really, the bottom line is, simply, do you like it?

Just in case you're in the San Francisco Bay Area area during the holidays, I'd like to invite you to my CD Release Party & performance on Dec. 28, 8pm at Anna's Jazz Island in downtown Berkeley! It's a cute jazz club, very welcoming atmosphere, located at 2120 Allston Way. I'll be performing with my trio (myself on piano, Eric Marshall on bass, Andre Custodio on drums) with special guests Alex Yeung on electric guitar, and my jazz mentor Eddie Gale, a legendary trumpeter who recorded with Cecil Tayler and Sun Ra. It should be a great evening of music!
Warm wishes for the holidays,
Valerie
