Family, friends seek justice for 2006 homicide
(06/20/09) CROWN HEIGHTS - Friends and family marched in honor of a 16-year-old girl killed three years ago, and they are calling for help in solving the homicide.
Chanel Petro Nixon was found dumped in front of a church in Crown Heights inside a plastic bag in June 2006.
Organizers marched from the girl's home in Bedford-Stuyvesant to the church where she was found. The march began in silence, but they soon spoke out that they want the person who is responsible to come forward. They also called on any witnesses to help law enforcement.
Police are offering more than $32,000 for information leading to an arrest in this case. Meanwhile, Nixon's friends and families are pressuring the city to move the case to the major case unit, which would allow police to allocate more resources.

It has been two years since the murder of Brooklyn honor student Chanel Petro-Nixon and police still have no suspects and no arrest in the case. On Saturday at 1p.m., a group led by Chanel's parents will lead a community march starting at Fulton St. and Marcus Garvey Blvd. in Brooklyn and ending at 212 Kingston Ave., where her body was found.
In addition to asking the public for help in solving the murder, the family is asking the NYPD to assign the investigation to its major case squad.

She never shows up to meet her friend or get the application. Four days later, her body is found -- strangled and stuffed into a garbage bag. The flyers around New York say it all: "Somebody Knows Something." But so far, no one is talking.

It was last June 18, Father's Day, when beautiful, 16-year-old Chanel Petro-Nixon vanished, in broad daylight, from her Brooklyn neighborhood. She had enjoyed a life that was blessed - and cursed.
Chanel had parents who loved her, a church that welcomed her, and report cards filled with A's.
Yet she lacked two important traits: She wasn't white and she wasn't blond, unlike the many missing and murdered girls who, around the same time, stumbled from bars and into our collective consciousness.
Chanel had black skin. Did it make a difference?
For a long time, her parents were loath to complain that race played a role in her case's treatment. Not anymore.

She got straight A's, went to church every Sunday, and lit up a room with her smile. The question detectives now have is, who would want to see her dead?On Father's Day of 2006, Chanel left her home in the Bedford-Stuyvesant section of Brooklyn to walk down the street to meet a friend and then go to a job interview at Applebees. She wanted to get a summer job -- and she had the interview all lined up. But, she never made it to the restaurant -- or to meet her friend. A few days later, Chanel's strangled body was found in a trash bag, just blocks from her home. The startling and downright scary part for investigators: no one is telling them anything. Chanel went missing on an extremely busy stretch of road in Brooklyn in broad daylight. Dozens of people were most likely sitting on stoops in front of their homes or shopping across the street at a line of stores. But so far, no witnesses can be found. And it's not for lack of trying. Detectives have put in thousands of hours searching for whoever killed Chanel. But so far, police haven't been able to find a motive for the crime. They haven't even been able to find anyone who disliked Chanel.

To whom it may concern:
You have taken her away from me physically, but she will always be with me in my heart; she is part of my being. When I close my eyes, I could still see her beautiful smile. I remember her gentle touch, her soft lips against mine as she said goodbye to me on that Sunday evening June 2006. I miss her laughter, her funny jokes towards her brothers and her father; how they miss her so. She had such a bright future ahead of her. Why could you not stop? Why couldn’t you let her go?
Over 2,000 years ago my lord and savior Jesus Christ was hung on the cross, he too was put to death innocently. He knew he had to pay the price for all sins even your sins; He loved us so much that he died for us. He conquered the grave and lives today and because he lives, I know Chanel will live again someday. It is not too late for you to live in the earth made new. Jesus does not lie and he always keeps his promises. In that earth made new they will be no hurting, no jealousy, no pain, no death, no crying, and no low self-esteem.
When Jesus returns all these things will be done away with. How could you continue to live in peace knowing what you did to Chanel? One day sooner than we expect the lord will appear in the clouds of heaven and every eye shall see him. I pray that I would be able to forgive you by then by the grace of god, then both of us will be able to say low this is our lord, we have waited for him and he will save us.
