Started in late 2005 by Ben Washburne (Guitar), Andrew (Guitar and Vocals) and Thomas Fickley (Drums), and Walt Barber (Bass and Vocals), Help on the Way began playing in front of audiences at Western Albemarle Battle of the Bands in spring 2006. Keyboardist John Moors started playing in late 2006, and the band played at Battle of the Bands again, winning this time. Since then they have played at Uncle Charlie's in Crozet, Gravity Lounge, multiple private parties and school functions, the Crozet Music Festival, won the MRC Invisible Children Battle of the bands in spring 2008 (as well as the WAHS battle of the bands). George Washburne started filling in for Ben on guitar when the elder left to study abroad in Germany for a year in summer 2007. Recently the band has added Alex Ward (Trumpet) and part-time harmonica player Alec McHugh. The band is now on a long term hiatus thanks to college, but it may not be permanent. Maybe someday those recordings will pop up somewhere, cause they'll actually be done.
How do we rock thee? Let us count the ways. We rock thee to the depth and breadth and height our souls can reach, when feeling out of sight For the ends of Being and ideal Grace. We rock thee to the level of everyday's Most quiet need, by sun and candle-light. We rock thee freely, as men strive for Right; We rock thee purely, as they turn from Praise. We rock thee with a passion put to use In our old griefs, and with our childhoods' faith. We rock thee with a beat we seemed to lose With our lost picks, --- we rock thee with the breath, Smiles, tears, of all our lives! --- and, if God choose, We shall but rock thee better after death.
