Hemlock Smith and Les Poissons Autistes discovered each other on the Web-Sampler « Bon pour les Oreilles Vol. 2 » that the swiss magazine « L’Hebdo » compiled in 2007. Normally, those two projects should never have met; the gentle Pop of the former and the noisy landscapes of the latter seem way too far apart, but a mutual attraction developed nevertheless, almost at once. Maybe it’s the haunting melancholy that is present on both shores… The desire to collaborate came to life and, after a few interesting demos, Hemlock Smith and Les Poissons Autistes are now proud to present the result of their teamwork, aptly titled “Three Times Dead”.
Hemlock Smith is the project of singer/songwriter Michael Frei, active in Lausanne, Switzerland. His music, anchored somewhere between Pop, Rock, Folk and Jazz, tells darkly ironic stories, sung with a gentle voice. “A Secret Life” (2002) and “Umbrella, Fitz & Gerald” (2006), his two albums so far, managed to create a discreetly captivating universe. A third album is currently due for release in early 2009.
Les Poissons Autistes, founded in 2001, are a duo; Stéphane Babey and Philippe Simon, travelling back and forth between Lausanne and Geneva. Their enthusiasm for sonic landscapes became stronger and stronger every year; recorded with guitar, bass, trumpet, accordion and empty beer cans, thereafter dismembered and lovingly reassembled in their laptops, they made several albums, the last of them being titled “Mal Foutu” (2007) (although several new projects are already heating up their harddisks).
“Three Times Dead” mixes these two worlds together rather than presenting them as opposites; the sweet Pop loses itself in the drones, the soft Piano intertwines with a screeching guitar, the voice develops ever new facets and mutates into an instrument of its own. Sometimes intimate, like in songs such as “Les Corps Subtils” or “Birmingham”, sometimes like an earthquake (see songs like “The Flat Hands” or “A Space between us”)…
The lyrics turn out to be a real trip into movie land, with ghastly figures creeping around in macabre stories. You will meet Charles Bukowski, Richard Widmark, Gene Tierney and a very peculiar legal examiner from Texas. Tales, screams and songs, everything mixes up and is eventually devoured by the Noise.

Hemlock Smith et Les Poissons Autistes se sont mutuellement découverts sur « Bon pour les oreilles, vol.2 », net-compilation concoctée par le magazine « L'Hebdo » en 2007. A première vue, un gouffre stylistique aurait dû séparer la pop du premier du bruitisme des seconds; pourtant, il s'est produit comme une sorte de magnétisme réciproque. Peut-être dû à une teinte – et un ton – de mélancolie partagés par chaque rive. L’envie de travailler ensemble s’est fait jour et, après quelques ébauches encourageantes, Hemlock Smith et Les Poissons Autistes ont décidé de pousser plus loin leur collaboration, dont « Three Times Dead » est le témoignage.
Hemlock Smith est le projet du chanteur, auteur et compositeur Michael Frei, basé à Lausanne. Sa musique, aux confluences rock, folk, pop et jazz, pourvoit des histoires de pénombre évoquées d'une voix conviant ironie et douceur. « A Secret Life » (2002) et « Umbrella Fitz & Gerald » (2006), ses deux disques pour l'heure, lui ont permis de créer un monde en retenue d'une entêtante originalité. Un troisième album est prévu pour début 2009.
Les Poissons Autistes, quant à eux, s'appellent aussi Stéphane Babey et Philippe Simon. Ils sont nés en 2001 et sont basés à Lausanne et Genève. Au fil des années, ils ont développé un attachement certain pour des structures impressionnistes bâties d'instruments divers (guitare, basse, trompette, accordéon, boîte de bière vide...) patiemment refaçonnés dans les entrailles de leurs laptops. Leur dernier album en date s'intitule « Mal Foutu » (2007), mais de nombreux nouveaux projets sont déjà en train de surchauffer leurs disques durs.
« Three Times Dead » mêle ces deux univers, sans se contenter de les juxtaposer : le feutré pop s’enchâsse dans les drones, la douceur du piano s’unit aux déchirures de guitare, la voix démultiplie ses registres pour créer un objet à part entière, aux colorations tour à tour intimistes (« Les Corps subtils», « Birmingham ») ou telluriques (« The Space Between Us », « Flat Hands »).
Les textes offrent un billet pour un trip cinématographique, avec de sombres personnages qui hantent des contes macabres… on y croisera entre autres Charles Bukowski, Richard Widmark, Jacques de la Palice et un médecin légiste texan bien étrange…. Cris, chansons, spoken word, tout se mélange pour être inéluctablement avalé par le bruit.

Normalerweise hätten sich diese beiden Formationen gar nie begegnen sollen; zu weit auseinander scheinen der Pop des einen und die Geräuschkulissen der anderen zu liegen, aber eine gewisse Anziehungskraft wurde sofort festgestellt. Vielleicht durch die hintergründige Melancholie, die an beiden Ufern vorhanden ist. Die Lust, miteinander zu arbeiten kam zu Tage und nach einigen ansehnlichen Skizzen, legen Hemlock Smith und Les Poissons Autistes mit «Three Times Dead» nun das Resultat ihres Teamworks vor.

Ihre Liebe zu klangmalerischen Strukturen wurde während den Jahren immer offensichtlicher. Aufgenommen mit Gitarre, Bass, Trompete, Akkordeon und leeren Bierdosen, um danach in ihren Laptops liebevoll zerstückelt und neu bearbeitet zu werden. Ihr neuestes Album trägt den Titel «Mal Foutu» (2007), aber neue Projekte erhitzen schon ihre Harddisks.
«Three Times Dead» vermischt diese beiden Welten und stellt sie nicht nur gegensätzlich dar: der sanfte Pop verliert sich in den Drones, das weiche Piano vermischt sich mit der kreischenden Gitarre, die Stimme entfaltet immer neue Facetten und entwickelt sich so zu einem eigentlichen Instrument. Manchmal intim wie in «Les Corps subtils» oder «Birmingham», manchmal erdbebenartig, beispielsweise: «The Space Between Us» oder «The Flat Hands».
Die Texte entpuppen sich als Trip in die Filmwelt, mit gruseligen Gestalten die in makaberen Geschichten daherschleichen. So trifft man dort auf Charles Bukowski, Richard Widmark, Jacques de la Palice und einen sehr eigenartigen Leichenarzt aus Texas. Schreie, Lieder und Geschichten, alles vermischt sich und wird irgendwann unwiderruflich vom Lärm verschlungen.
Die Reise an die Grenzen einer Traumwelt…
