A cross between Lambchop and Tom Waits
Some people wanted to see in Hemlock Smith a somewhat „cinematic“ band, whatever
that means. Not even upset by that statement, these musicians from Lausanne,
Switzerland, took it literally last year and embarked upon a journey that took them to
medieval Sweden, recreating the film score for „Sir Arne’s Treasure“, a silent classic
directed by Mauritz Stiller in 1919. It’s like they wanted to get this „movie
misunderstanding“ out of their way, once and for all. But not quite.
Because with „Keep the Devil out of Hillsboro“, their third record, Hemlock Smith prove
that this experience also allowed them to refine the contours of their universe, between
delicate songwriting and subtle, never showy arrangements. In one word, the band
strenghten their musical identity, using all the varieties of style contained in modern folk
music. They also reunite some of the shadows that influence their craft, from Tom Waits to Mark Hollis, from the classy country music of Lambchop to the intellectual, arty rock of
dEUS.
That very successful blend shows itself first in the quality of the orchestrations. Spartan,
composite or luxurious, the arrangements always seem to let the songs breathe while
clothing them really fine. Accordion, banjo, violin or choir improve the tunes without
choking them, sometimes drifting into Mingus territory (“Family Tree”), sometimes
evoking a callous blues or a circus waltz that even Nick Cave would be proud of („Blink“
and „Dunkirk/Jerusalem“).
As for the most stripped down tracks from the album, they also benefit from this assured
songwriting. Built around a breezy guitar or a muted piano, cruising with a delicate
rhythm section, they are steered by the most particular voice of singer Michael Frei.
Storyteller or crooner, Hemlock Smith’s vocalist adjusts his delivery from song to song,
slowly lyrical, magnetic or restrained.
But, most importantly, he’s able to enhance the delicacy of the arrangements, like in the
very mysterious „The North Sea“, a tribute to deceased scandinavian pianist Esbjörn
Svensson, a tune whose watery melancholy doesn’t imitate this musician but, in a way,
tenderly „describes“ him.
This track, even though it is a special one on the record, symbolizes quite perfectly the
transformation achieved by this band on „Keep the Devil out of Hillsboro“, an album of
accomplished craft, nourished from past experience and original in their own way. Full of
humble beauty, the songs of Hemlock Smith shouldn’t suffer from any kind of cinematic
comparison no more. Their own magnetism will now be enough to fuel our imagination.

On a souvent voulu voir en Hemlock Smith un groupe cinématographique. Allez savoir pourquoi. Pas rancuniers, les Veveysans ont choisi de prendre l'observation au pied de la lettre. Et se sont embarqués l’année dernière dans la mise en musique de « Sir Arne's Treasure », film réalisé en 1919 par le suédois Mauritz Stiller. Un projet comme pour régler une fois pour toutes ce "malentendu cinématographique". Mais pas seulement.
Car avec Keep The Devil Out Of Hillsboro, son troisième album studio, Hemlock Smith prouve que cette expérience lui a également permis d'affiner les contours de son univers, entre songwriting délicat et arrangements variés, jamais ostentatoires. En une formule, le groupe raffermit son identité musicale, jouant de la large palette offerte par le folk. Et réconcilie les ombres tutélaires qui nourrissent sa musique, de Tom Waits à Mark Hollis, en passant par la country classieuse de Lambchop et le rock érudit de dEUS.
Cet alliage réussit se manifeste en premier lieu dans la qualité des instrumentations. Impressionnistes, composites ou encore abondants, les arrangements fascinent par leur capacité à laisser respirer les chansons tout en les rhabillant. Accordéon, banjo, violon et chœurs rehaussent ainsi les compositions initiales, sans jamais les étouffer, insufflant ici une dérive jazz qui évoque Mingus (« Family Tree »), là un blues terreux ou une valse de cirque triste que n’aurait pas reniés Nick Cave (« Blink » et « Dunkirk/Jerusalem »).
Quant aux titres les plus dépouillés de l’album, ils profitent également de cette écriture assurée. Construits autour d’une guitare légère ou d’un piano feutré, se délitant au rythme d’une basse et d’une batterie parfaites de délicatesse, ils sont portés par la voix si particulière de Michael Frei. Conteur ou crooner, le chanteur d’Hemlock Smith module son phrasé d’un morceau à l’autre, jouant d’un lyrisme lent ou maniéré, retenu ou magnétique. Surtout, il parvient à épouser la subtilité des instrumentations, à l’image du troublant « The North Sea », hommage au pianiste suédois Esbjörn Svensson disparu l’année dernière, dont la mélancolie aqueuse évoque plus qu’elle n’imite la figure célébrée.
A la manière de ce titre à part et pourtant emblématique de la mue effectuée par Hemlock Smith, Keep The Devil Out Of Hillsboro présente un groupe aux reliefs plus aboutis, riche des expériences passées, maître de son dessein musical. Pleines d’une beauté humble, les chansons d’Hemlock Smith ne devraient plus pâtir de la comparaison cinématographique. Leur magnétisme seul suffira désormais à nourrir les imaginaires.

Man hat in Hemlock Smith manchmal eine Band sehen wollen, die irgendwie mit Film und Filmmusik zu tun hat. Wer weiss warum. Ohne jegliche Rachsucht haben die Lausanner diese Theorie in Realität umgewandelt und haben Anfang 2008 eine neue Partitur für den schwedischen Stummfilm „Sir Arne’s Treasure“ (gedreht 1919 von Mauritz Stiller) geschrieben. Ein Nebenprojekt um dieses „Kino“-Missverständnis ein für alle Mal aus der Welt zu schaffen. Aber nicht nur.
Denn mit „Keep the Devil out of Hillsboro“, Titel des dritten Albums, beweisen Hemlock Smith dass diese Erfahrung Ihnen erlaubt hat, Ihren Stil noch weiter zu verfeinern und zu erneuern, zwischen zartem Songwriting und abwechslungsreichen, niemals aufdringlichen Arrangements. In einem Wort, die Band bekräftigt Ihre musikalische Identität und benutzt die ganze musikalische Palette, die moderne Folkmusik erlaubt. Sie vereinen auch die grossen Schatten, die um Ihre Musik kreisen, Tom Waits und Mark Hollis seien genannt, aber auch die stilvolle Country-Musik von Lambchop und den intelligenten Rock von dEUS.
Diesen sehr eindrucksvollen Mix bemerkt man zuerst in der grossen Qualität der Instrumentierung. Impressionistisch angehaucht, vielfältig oder komplex faszinieren die Arrangements durch ihre Fähigkeit, die Songs atmen zu lassen aber sie doch zu bekleiden. Akkordeon, Banjo, Geige und Chor ergänzen so die Songs ohne sie zu ersticken, manchmal mit einem Mingus/Jazz Touch („Family Tree“), manchmal mit dreckigem Blues oder Zirkuswalzer, die selbst Nick Cave nicht zurückweisen würde („Blink“ und „Dunkirk/Jerusalem“).
Auch die ruhigeren Songs profitieren von diesem selbstsicheren Songwriting. Aufgebaut auf einer schwerelosen Gitarre oder einem abgedämpften Klavier, getragen von einer perfekt delikaten Rhythmsection ergänzen sie so ideal die bemerkenswerte Stimme von Michael Frei. Erzählend oder schmachtend passt sich der Sänger von Hemlock Smith dem jeweiligen Song an und singt langsam lyrisch, dann wieder zurückhaltend oder magnetisch. Er schafft es immer, die subtile Instrumentierung zu ergänzen, zum Beispiel im sehr schönen „The North Sea“, gewidmet dem verstorbenen schwedischen Pianisten Esbjörn Svensson, ein Song dessen Melancholie diesen Musiker nicht imitiert sondern sanft erwähnt.
Mag dieses Lied im Album selber doch speziell herausklingen, so beschreibt es doch irgendwie perfekt die Wandlung von Hemlock Smith und deren „Keep the Devil out of Hillsboro“. Die Platte präsentiert eine Band, die mächtig an Profil gewonnen hat, die die früheren Experimente nun komplett verdaut und integriert hat, eine Band die Ihren Stil beherrscht. Voller bescheidener Schönheit sind die Songs von Hemlock Smith und sollten demnach keine filmischen Vergleiche mehr benötigen. Ihre eigene Anziehungskraft wird uns von nun an in ihren Bann ziehen.
