  • Music

(These words are from a recording of Iggy Pop talking on a chatshow from the 70's. It was used by the band Mogwai for the song "Punk Rock" on their 1999 release "Come on Die Young.")

"I'll tell you about Punk Rock. Punk Rock is a word used by by dilettantes, and uh, and uh, heartless manipulators, about music... that takes up the energies, and the bodies, and the hearts, and the souls, and the time, and the minds of young men who give what they have to it, and give everything they have to it."

"And it's a, it's a term that's based on contempt. It's a term that's based on based on fashion, style, elitism, satanism and everything that's rotten about rock 'n' roll."

"I don't know Johnny Rotten but, but, I'm sure, I'm sure, he puts as much blood and sweat into what he does as Sigmund Freud did. You see, what, what sounds to you like a big load of trashy old noise, is in fact the brilliant music of a genius: Myself. And that music is so powerful, that it's quite beyond my control. And uh, when I'm in the grips of it, I don't feel pleasure and I don't feel pain, either physically or emotionally. Do you understand what I'm talking about?"

"Have you ever, have you ever felt like that, when you just, when you just, you couldn't feel anything and you don't want to either, you know, like that. Do you understand what I'm saying sir?"

    The Devil and Daniel Johnston

Most BBC Masterpiece Theater stuff. All those wonderful Dickens novels turned into mini-series. The HBO series Rome. Period pieces about Queens, Kings and English History. Shakespeare. Jane Austen. The Bronte sisters. Old movies... my wife and I love watching every black and white classic ever made through Netflix. Bogart. Hepburn. Cary Grant. Betty Davis. You know, fast talking high-pants stuff. It's our entertainment.

  • Television

Watching mice is better. Television takes away your power. Turn it off, or turn it on its side and just leave it on for a nice blue radioactive nightlight. Better yet, throw it out the damn window.

“So, you listen to me. Listen to me: Television is not the truth! Television is a God-damned amusement park! Television is a circus, a carnival, a traveling troupe of acrobats, storytellers, dancers, singers, jugglers, side-show freaks, lion tamers, and football players. We're in the boredom-killing business! So if you want the truth... Go to God! Go to your gurus! Go to yourselves! Because that's the only place you're ever going to find any real truth. But, man, you're never going to get any truth from us. We'll tell you anything you want to hear; we lie like hell. We'll tell you that, uh, Kojak always gets the killer, or that nobody ever gets cancer at Archie Bunker's house, and no matter how much trouble the hero is in, don't worry, just look at your watch; at the end of the hour he's going to win. We'll tell you any shit you want to hear. We deal in illusions, man! None of it is true! But you people sit there, day after day, night after night, all ages, colors, creeds... We're all you know. You're beginning to believe the illusions we're spinning here. You're beginning to think that the tube is reality, and that your own lives are unreal. You do whatever the tube tells you! You dress like the tube, you eat like the tube, you raise your children like the tube, you even 'think' like the tube! This is mass madness, you maniacs! In God's name, you people are the real thing! WE are the illusion! So turn off your television sets. Turn them off now. Turn them off right now. Turn them off and leave them off! Turn them off right in the middle of the sentence I'm speaking to you now! TURN THEM OFF..."
    -Howard Beale "Network" 1976

Reading poetry at the Newark Brew Ha Ha 12/19/08

Henry Long is a painter, writer, poet and photographer. Born in 1962 and raised outside of Wilkes-Barre Pennsylvania, Henry displayed impressive artistic abilities from an early age. He was awarded the Pennsylvania Governor’s School of the Arts Scholarship at 14, and began taking college level art classes that same year under the mentorship of Berenice D’Vorzon at Wilkes University.

Working in a highly personalized style combining figurative, mythic, cultural and alchemic imagery, Long uses a variety of mixed media to bring forth his poetic, wry and emotionally charged visionary pieces. He has shown in hundreds of one-man exhibits and group shows, and his works are displayed in numerous private and corporate collections.

He has given art instruction, and has taught "Experiencing Art Through Joseph Campbell and The Power of Myth” for Wilkes University, the Delaware Art Museum and the Grand Opera. He has designed many covers for CD’s, book jackets, posters and T-shirts, and has also written extensively about that fellow Cartographer of the Heart, musician and artist Daniel Johnston. He is the recipient of many grants and awards for his painting, works on paper and photography, as well as the Delaware Division of the Arts 2002 Individual Artistic Fellowship Grant as an Emerging Professional in Poetry. He has given hundreds of public readings of his writing and poetry, and has won many slams, although he no longer competes.

Three brand new chapbooks of his poetry are now available in a signed limited edition. (See below for more information). A collection of short stories will be published sometime in 2009, as will his new collection of poetry, "Comedy/Tragedy/Poetry."

He continues to create and enjoy life along with his wife Emma Etain Long, also a painter, in Bellefonte, Delaware. They are happy. They like rodents. A lot.

Henry, The gig was truly amazing. He played Manchester Town hall, in the cathedral part. It was beautifully ironic. He seems to be doing well, which was lovely. Laura Marling played with him, have you heard her music? How is your poetry going? Great news about the Johnston artwork! Take care x

    Hey there,

    Here's one from left field...

Ever wondered what to do in the event of a nuclear threat?

A while ago I found stuff that inspired me to make this film:

Living Under the Shadow of the Nuclear Umbrella

Both artistic (ensure you get the background music!) and educational, it primarily comprises official British government civil defence advice.

Though source materials are quite aged, much remains relevant today.

I encourage all to visit the YouTube page to learn more (Show support! Rate! Comment!) and responsibly circulate as widely as possible, here:

    Help to raise awareness.

Say have you checked out my web site recently?

Take care and keep in touch.

    Best,
    Faber.
