Happy Hen's Interests
|
| General | Reading, writing, making jokes, bowling, poker, listening to live music, pretending to fall comatose so that people come up to me to check if I'm all right and when they're real close I yell out "Jehosophat" just as loudly as I can. The whole range, really. Oh, and I am a Christian, but strangely my interests don't include going up to complete strangers and saying, "Jesus wants you for a sunbeam." I checked with Jesus. He has plenty of sunbeams already. | | Music | Generally not what the Kids are listening to These Days. Damn kids, with their genital piercings and their ice mocachinos. What I do like includes the Beatles, the Kinks, Queen, Beach Boys, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, later-era Metallica, the Anyones (Melbourne), the Killers, Franz Ferdinand, some Tool/A Perfect Circle, the Darkness, the Living End. Local acts Even, Little Ice Age, No Through Road, Running with Horses, Meanwell College and the sadly defunct Zero Kelvins. My favourite ever song is Don McLean's 'American Pie'; we don't talk about Madonna's version where I come from. | | Movies | I watch a lot of movies and am always trying to keep up with the new ones, so this is in a constant state of flux. The most recent amazing film I saw was Children of Men. I'm also trying to catch up with all the old classics: Casablanca, the Magnificent Seven, A Fistful of Dollars, Pulp Fiction, etc. As for movies I have seen: Dead Poet's Society, Being John Malkovitch, Ghostbusters, Batman Begins, Children of Men, Psycho, the original Star Wars trilogy, The Third Man, The Big Chill, A Fish Called Wanda, Life of Brian and The Holy Grail, The Taste of Others, Momento, the recent Aussie version of MacBeth, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, The Dinner Game, The Lord of the Rings trilogy, Brick, Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain...am I boring you? | | Television | Television has been very important to me over the years, so I'm going to list shows both past and present that made me what I am today (that's what as in "what in God's name?"): Monty Python's Flying Circus, The Young Ones, Fawlty Towers, Blackadder, The Simpsons (last couple of seasons though - yech), Futurama, the Law & Order franchises, Frasier, Firefly (the cruellest and most unwarranted cancellation in history), The Micallef Program (however it's spelt), Big Train,The Fast Show, Scrubs, Arrested Development, Family Guy, and despite my best efforts I have started to get sucked in to Deadwood and The Sopranos. And, after waiting a long time, I was not disappointed by Heroes. Not at all.
By now I know what you're thinking, and you're right: my eyes are completely square, my skin is a pasty shade of beige, and I don't have a girlfriend. But I can quote any line from Futurama at will. A fair trade off I think. | | Books | Favourite book: "Catch-22", Joseph Heller.
'America the Book' is truly awesome. Anything by Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman or Bill Bryson. Douglas Adams' "Hitch-hiker's Guide to the Galaxy", Lord of the Rings trilogy, various books by P.G. Wodehouse, "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, "Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable", "1984" by George Orwell, "The Time Traveler's Wife" by Audrey Niffenegger, "War of the Flowers" by Tad Williams, "The Lost Boys" by Orson Scott Card, Garfield comics, Winnie the Pooh (when I was younger - re-read some recently and it's trippy stuff). Am constanly in search of fantasy novels that aren't just plain awful, but I'm up against it. Also just recently getting into graphic novels. Alan Moore's "Watchmen" is a masterpiece, but also "The Dark Knight Returns" and "Batman: Year One" by Frank Miller, "Kingdom Come" by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, "Squadron Supreme" by Mark Gruenwald and the various bits of Gaiman's "Sandman" that I've read.
One day I'll get through Dickens, Shakespeare, and all them. Give me time. | | Heroes | Major Michael Mori, Terry Pratchett, Billy Connolly, Ben Elton, Daniel Kitson (a recent addition), Albert Einstein (funny guy), Andrew P. Street, Jack "the Lad" Sheppard, and of course, the forgotten heroes, soulless corporate executives. |

About me:
When I finally decided that I didn't want to do anything with my body other than feed it, walk around in it, and find people to have sex with it, I chose to focus on exercising my mind instead, and I've never looked back. To that end, I spend my time reading, watching movies, talking endlessly and mastering the correct use of the word "anticipate". I also write stuff, such as the blogs you can access on this very page. Just recently, me and another guy have set up The Coffee Spoon Auditorium (www.coffeespoon.net) a website where we plan to post interesting things we've written and hopefully get other people to write interesting things. Failing that, we have the perfect URL for a cutlery business.

Who I'd like to meet:
The sinister, perpetually shrouded but tantalisingly familiar figure who haunts my fevered nightmares. I think he and I should catch up for coffee and a bagel some time.
