STAR - Sound, Technology & Recording.

Due to popular demand Herbert Media will be running the next STAR course, for music technology and sound recording in January 2008. This extremely popular course has been running for the last 10 years, formally at the Depot studios in Bond St, and has been the launch platform for many sound engineers over that time.
The course is aimed at the complete beginner who just wants to start to understand the recording process and look at a possible career in sound engineering or to get more out of their home recordings. The secret of its success is the balance of hands on practical experience combined with technical and musical theory and, as it is aimed at the complete beginner, it makes no preconception that any one has any previous experience or knowledge.
It runs over ten full days with a two-hour assessment at the end of the course.
So what does the course cover?
The course follows a logical path starting with the theory of sound and looks at some of the little anomalies in sound that you may or may not be aware of. Because, a basic understanding of how sound behaves, can be a great help to both live and studio sound engineers.
It looks at the different types of microphones and how they work so, when you come to miking an instrument, you can make a more informed judgment on which microphone to use. It also covers miking techniques, noise gates, compressors, reverb, EQ, Aux sends, Headphone mixes, multi track recording and mastering. With the aim being, that if you walk in through the door with some experience on the first day, by the end of the tenth session you should be able to record your own session with a band.
In addition we cover everything one needs to know about basic studio recording, providing a solid grounding on which to build up skills and with students given a full set of notes that supports all topics covered during the course so there is not need to be taking notes during the day. All of this is taught in a well-equipped, comfortable digital recording studio on a Makie d8b mixing desk. And, with a café in the building there is plenty of refreshment on tap for those breaks between sessions.
Why an assessment?
Ok this is where it gets good. At the end of the ten-day course you will be given a two-hour assessment to find out what level of understanding you have achieved. If you pass at a certain level, and we make every effort to get
People through, you will be invited onto our approved engineers list and given full privilege to hire the studio for your own use.
