About me:
This site is being managed by Herb's children. We wanted to give the public, who loved our Father so much, a place to share their memories and send their wishes. Thank you to everyone who listened to and watched Dad through all the years he was doing what he loved so much. Whether it was KIMO news, "Contact", "Tales or Terror","The Talk Show" or "Desperate and Dateless" he enjoyed the time he spent with all of you. He loved journalism in it's purest form. He loved being the center of attention. Most of all he loved making people think.

Another fond Herb memory:
Anybody who knows me knows that I cast a shadow. I make all-you-can-eat buffet owners a little bit nervous when they seem me coming their direction.

I was living in Wasilla at the time, and as a member of the Chamber of Commerce board, it fell to me to secure some "entertainment" for one of our meetings. I was able to coax Herb into coming out to the Valley that day.

I got to introduce Herb, and shared a story about him.

Afterwards, Herb walked up to the podium and said: "I'd like to thank JJ for that warm introduction. JJ is two of my best friends."

What could I say? Classic Herb Shaindlin.

I'm very sorry about your loss. Mr Shaindlin was one of my favorites on Alaskan radio. I would see him sometimes at the Penny's Mall. What a legend.

..Yes, I remember Herb ending his talk shows in a mock sadistic voice saying “Remember, we’re all in this alone!”..

I worked with Herb on a number of occasions. He was a great influence. While he had a public persona/image of being curmudgeonly, the REAL Herb was among the most gracious, caring and honest people I have ever known in 30+ years in the broadcast industry.

If Herb liked you, it meant you had a life-long friend, who would never hesitate if there was something he could do to encourage you when you hit a rough spot.

There are many stories and memories of Herb's which I carry fondly.

One such memory was a snowy day at KENI, a day when the city snow plows just happened to leave a tall berm of snow at the edge of Herb's driveway, making it impossible for Herb to get to work on time.

His show started at 1:06PM, and so I took a big career risk and sat down at Herb's microphone and started doing my best "Herb Shaindlin". I ranted vigorously about the ineptitude of the city snow plow operators and the inadequacies of a city government who would dare misdirect snow into MY driveway. While I know I could never pass for Herb Shaindlin, I guess anybody listening that day at least knew I was doing a Herb impression.

About 30 minutes later, Herb arrived, sat down across from me in the studio...I turned up his microphone, he looked at me and said..."you do me better than I do me". I had never felt more flattered in my whole career.

Herb...more than anyone else, profoundly affected me and the decisions I would go on to make professionally. Not a day goes by that I don't think about him, and To see old friends whose names I recognize from the old days at KFQD and KENI, reinforces that Herb was beloved by everybody who got to know him.

"So be good to yourself, and if you possibly can, be good to someone else, and remember what my boot camp instructor told me as I was preparing for my first duty with live ammunition...we're all...in this thing...ALONE...good-night".

Rest in Peace, Herb.

Herb will be missed by many. I first met Herb in the late 70s. Later after I moved to Seward and become the coordinator (1988) for the Polar Bear Jumpoff I asked Herb to be the MC. He would drive down from Anchorage after his late radio show to be here for the jump. He was the Polar Bear Jump MC for over 17 years. His comments and descriptions of the jumpers were a delight for all. Herb and Jean become close friends. I was interviewed a number of times on Herb's radio shows and received my "I survived the Herb Shaindlin Show" certificate. My husband Don always has fun quoting, "Everyone's entitled to my opinion". We have several coffee cups in our cupboard with Herb's quote.
We so enjoyed knowing your Dad and being friends with both Herb and Jean. He will live on in my heart.

It's heartening - but not at all surprising - to see the growing comments about how he touched the lives of those around him. I had the sincere privilege of working with Herb during his time at KENI in the late 80's/early 90's era and my story isn't all that dissimilar.

Herb took the time to continue me on my path in broadcasting, and I ended up managing a news station in Montana, hosting a show - and then moving on to public affairs and being a PR representative for various public and private entities.

I keep hearing the final bars of 'Flapper Fannie' playing over in my head as I picture him signing off for the last time.

He is an irreplaceable Alaskan treasure. I shall always appreciate my time with him.

I had the honor of working with Herb at KIMO in the 70's. I remember telling him one day that he was actually a nice guy in person. His reply was something like "Shhh, please don't tell anyone." But I did anyway. And I'll say it again... He was a nice guy!

Herb is an Alaskan institution, and his passing is very sad news. I would on many occasions get in trouble for staying up late listening to The Talk Show and Desperate and Dateless. I loved listening to Herb and he is the reason I have such a love for talk radio today.

I had the honor of meeting Herb at Jenny's wedding. I was very nervous to meet him, because to me, he was larger than life and because of his gruff persona. He was incredibly nice to me. I was just a high school kid, and he could have just shrugged me off, but he was pleasant, listened to my opinion and made me feel at ease.

I will always miss Herb and I wish his family the best. Alaska lost a true hero and pioneer in radio and television.

This came to me from "Hank"

I just wish to send my condolences, Herb started me in radio in 1994, and I still play with it today. He will be missed by many people, me included. I took over from Herb as the MC for the Polar Bear Plunge a few years ago, I had always admired his spirit at this annual fund raiser.
He leaves behind quite a legacy, and I will always admire him.
