Here and Now, originally formed in spring 1974 to play at the Windsor Free Festival of that year, went through many early personnel changes, finally settling on a hard core membership of founder Kif Kif, Twink, Steffe and Keith the Bass for most of the mid to late 1970's. This line-up had a rare and elusive musical chemistry that brought about the sound that still defines the band today.
The history of the group is complicated: Daevid Allen joined them temporarily in 1977 with Gilli Smyth, and named the new project "Planet Gong".
Of the 76/77 hardcore, Twink left in September 1977, KK and Suze moved on in Jan. 1979, and Steffe in 1981.
However, Keith the Bass kept the flag flying, fronting various outbreaks of Here and Now before and since the official 'end of the band' in 1984. Steffe rejoined the project during the 1990's.
In the ad hoc and magical way the band's name suggests, other groupings of the Here and Now clan have also arisen, Noteably "Ici Maintenants" in 2001. Ici features KK, Twink and Steffe of the 1970's H&N line-up, plus, variously, Tim Flatus and Mike Howlett on bass.
And in 2007 there was the first live reunion of the full 1976 'quad-umvirate' as a tribute to another core 70's band member who had sadly passed away, Suze da Blues.
This myspace site has full-size companion site called HereNow.Be
It features loads more info on the Here and Now of the 1970's, original 1970's recordings and photos, as well as stuff about Ici Maintenants and more recent activities of "Here & Now 1976".
There is another excellent Myspace site for Here & Now, covering the present day version of the Here and Now band, which currently features Keith the Bass, Steffe, Joie and Merv.
HIYA, JUST GOT MY RIVINGTON PIKE 2. IT IS SUCH A REALLY GREAT ALBUM. IT TAKES ME BACK MORE YEARS THAN I CARE TO REMEMBER!! THANKS FOR THE GREAT JOB OF RESTORING THE OLD STUFF. HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY.
Wot a larf this was... Yes that’s me playing drums and we stopped the city good and proper !!! RedJen from the 80..s band the Belle Stars is on vocals, famous for the... "The clapping song"... "Sign of the times" ...amongst others ....But I am really sorry I couldn’t do anything about the guy who was filming us from stopping him singing, never mind at least he was enjoying himself !!! I am working on my siddhi (mystic) powers where I can manifest a 6 armed form so I can play drums, drink water, defend myself from drunks, dish out free food whist firing socks from a catapult into peoples mouths who can’t f**king sing !!! Anyway... for more on Redjen check this link www.myspace.com/redtreasure and for more on us check this one... www.matchlessgifts.org.uk Peace and one love eternal... Hare Krsna :~) Mattydread
