HAN008 - STICK MANOEUVRES - Medulate

“ever ready analogue poetic funk - a syncopated groove unites peace power passion undaunted undiluted essence of true raw expression”

Stick Manoeuvres are a Nottingham based funk and jazz outfit formed by Dave Stickman Higgins drummer of Kalima who were on the Manchester super label Factory Records the same record company that gave us Joy Division, New Order, The Happy Mondays and A Certain Ratio. The legendary post punk band A Certain Ratio (ACR) included Martin Moscrop (guitar and trumpet) the longest serving member who would later form Swamp Children with saxophonist Anthony Quigley and then Kalima. Other member of A Certain Ratio became, Quando Quango, T-Coy and Swing Out Sister. Kalima recruited Dave Higgins on drums in the mid to late 1980s. In his Hacienda days Dave Higgins, signed to Faatory Records playing for Kalima toured ineternationally alongside Arturo Sandoval, Style Council, James Taylor Quartet, Happy Mondays, Robin Jones and many more. He recalls the JBs turning up once Sunday Afternoon at Dingwalls to be featured with Kalima.

Dave Higgins is also an actor and performance poet. And in the 1990s would work on numerous occasions, at Ronnie Scoots and at Sounds Of Brazil (New York) with Flora Purim and Airto who commented "Stickman you have great energy".

More recently he has worked with labels Acid Jazz and Tim Love Lee of Tummy Tuch Records.

Stick Manoeuvres takes in all this history and rolls with it

3 tracks of jazz, jazz fusion and funk with latin afro and west indian influences plus and underlying A Certain Ratio, Kalima backbone to the music.

"It's Only Just A Garden"
Original with orchestral intro / Yam Who? Rework

Epic orchestral intro to the soul jazz grooves featuring Imaani from Incognito tearing it up on lead vocals. Jazz guitar supremo Chanan Hanpsal has had a successful career in music working with Kylie, Geri Halliwell, Jamiroquai, Valerie Etienne, Questlove, Adam F and touring the world with 23 Skidoo. And now he has written, recorded, arranged, and produced “It’s Only Just A Garden” for Here And Now Recordings.

Imaani lead vocalist with Incognito and following in the footsteps of Carleen Anderson and Jocelyn Brown delivers the perfectly fitting lead vocals with her rich tones. It’s obvious Chanan wrote the track with her in mind.

Charlie Creed-Miles features on drums. His background as an actor saw Luc Besson cast him in the Fifth Element and then had a leading role in Gary Oldman’s Nil By Mouth. He also fronts the band North Of Ping pong. They sound like a modern day Blockheads!

Backing vocals are by Debbie French who has sung extensive with Joey Negro and also faithless, Jon Cutler, Ultra Nate and Acid Jazz group Raw Stylus.

Sarah Button has played violin on recordings Jill Scott, New Sector Movements, on many 4 Hero tracks and for Placebo too. Natalie Bonner, also on violin has, worked with Max Richter and David McAlmont amongst others.

Trumpeter Arden Hart had played and worked with Chaka Khan, James Taylor Quartet, James Mason, Massive Attack, Gwen McCrae, Take That, Brand New Heavies and many many more.

And Jane Tuff who features on clarinet has played with many bands from the Acid Jazz days on clarinet and saxophone too.

Andy Panayi is on flute. He was no stranger to Here And Now Recordings having played flute and saxophone on much of the Funkanala stuff

Yam Who? remixers of Grace Jones, Joss Stone, John Legend, Dwele, Jill Scott, Raphael Saadiq and many more flip the script creating a retro boogie masterpiece.

Reverso 68 and LSB’s Pete Herebert commented “sounds like Maurice Fulton meets Atlantic Starr”

1st YAM WHO release of 2007- You Don't Care About Our Love b/w Flunky Gone Punky (We Are Ready)

Prins Thomas loves FLUNKY GONE PUNKY!! Also getting plays from Todd Terje, Lindstrom, Bill Brewster!

Fresh from not only remixing JOSS STONE, but being the first producers to do so and because RAPHAEL SAADIQ hooked them up, YAM WHO? return with their first own production of 2007. And it’s a monster release. The A Side a cover of the obscure British disco cut, CHINA BURTON’s YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR LOVE. The original has recently fetched £300 (yes pounds!) on the ‘Bay! Yam Who? has created a contemporary upbeat chunky boogie masterpiece complete with Norman Anderson’s soulful falsetto vocal delivery.

With FLUNKY GONE PUNKY (WE ARE READY), a dancefloor anthem in the making, Yam Who? have gone back to their roots. There are definite ARTHUR RUSSELL and THE CLASH influences in this dubby, synthy, punk-funk-disco bomb with reggae influences and wicked drumbreaks thrown in for good measure.

YAM WHO’s profile is second to none. Beyond JOSS STONE they have remixed THE FRESH PRINCE & DJ JAZZY JEFF, JOHN LEGEND, ZERO 7, INCOGNITO, THE SUNBURST BAND, CHAZ JANKEL, AMP FIDDLER, JILL SCOTT, RAPHAEL SAADIQ, ALISON CROCKETT, NATHAN HAINES, ONLY CHILD, LIZ FIELDS, EMMANUEL, and BEBEL GILBERTO to name but a few and done stuff for the following labels SONY, BROWNSWOOD, PAPA, UBIQUITY, COUNTERPOINT, COMPOST, STEREO DELUXE, WAH WAH 45s, RAW FUSION, FAR OUT, KINDRED SPIRITS and SCHEMA. They have recorded covers of the LEROY BURGESS boogie classic SUMMERTIME the MINNIE RIPERTON rare groove anthem HERE WE GO , plus HEATWAVES’s two step STAR OF THE STORY and LA BOPPERS WRAP YOU UP. And now Yam Who well and truly put CHINA BURTON’s YOU DON'T CARE ABOUT OUR LOVE on the soul map. Yam Who is Andy Williams, formerly of dubby funk disco outfit FUZZ AGAINST JUNK who recorded for NUPHONIC RECORDS and avid collector dj musician Des Morgan who plays percussion and bass.

NORMAN ANDERSON is no stranger to the soul and dance music industry having worked with, amongst others, Tony Allen, US3, Chaz Jankel and Altered Vibes the record label; he also has previous with the Yam Who? boys.

The FUNKANALA project is a combination of AFRO & LATIN rhythms with the worlds of JAZZ, FUNK & DANCE. Recorded and produced by the exploits of Jim Hawkins and John Cunningham in numerous studios, bedrooms, offices & warehouse spaces in North London and featuring master drummers, dancers & singers from SENEGAL plus the finest BRITISH JAZZ session players including Dave Lewis, Andy Panayi & Mornington Lockett.

And in the fall of 2005 we issued a limited run of white labels of "BAMAKO" written by OMAR DIOP and featuring the Coltrane-esque talents of master saxophonist MORNINGTON LOCKETT with "ECONOMY CLASS" on the flip showcasing BLOCKHEADS regular and co-writer DAVE LEWIS. This 12 was popular with a bright array of experienced dj's including SHUYA OKINO (KYOTO JAZZ MASSIVE), PATRICK FORGE, SIMON DUNMORE (DEFECTED RECORDS), BEN CHAPMAN (BBE), MR SCRUFF, CARL CRAIG, STACEY PULLEN, MICHAEL RUETTEN (WORLDWIDE FAMILY), TOM WIELAND (LES GAMMAS), BEN SMITH (REDBULL MUSIC ACADEMY, TRUSTTHEDJ), FAZE ACTION, MARK SPIRITUAL SOUTH, NIGEL PRANKSTER (3HEDZ / FORWARDSBACKWARDS), ROB LIFE & SKEG (BREAKIN BREAD), FRANKIE VALENTINE, SPIN DOCTOR (SOULBREW / BBE) and ALEX, JOHN & CEDRIC (VOICES COLLECTIVE) . And of course GOYA MUSIC who distributed for us getting the music to the far reaches of the planet. Let us take a moment to thank you guys for the support, it is most appreciated!!!

In March 2006 we licensed ECONOMY CLASS by FUNKANALA to SIMON DUNMORE'S label DEFECTED RECORDS for the MIAMI 2006 compilation. This has exposed our music to many thousand more people worldwide and was a start to HERE AND NOW RECORDINGS that we couldn't have hoped for!

The latter part of 2006 has seen FUNKANALA recording the rest of their fantastic album and for HERE AND NOW RECORDINGS the future holds an additional FUNKANALA 12 set for an early 2007 release and in short succession the FUNKANALA debut long player BE THERE TOMORROW. To follow this HERE AND NOW RECORDINGS is releasing a YAM WHO 12, a cover of a classic uk disco tune by CHINA BURTON and then and project recorded in Paris featuring MANU DIBANGO's rhythm section, the outcome a fantastic offkey vocal disco funk track with an afrobeat tune on the flipside. This will be with you in time for New Year! I edited my profile with Thomas' Myspace Editor V4.4

"Larry and I would blow up balloons, set up the food bar, prepare the punch, and give out acid, but we also spent a lot of time in the DJ booth, watching Nicky's every move. He pretty much taught us what he was doing". says Frankie Knuckles
We're doing another Love Fever Party on November 7th... This time we've got NYC Legend Nicky Siano over for a proper disco session. We'll be putting our usual Love Fever attention to detail into the sound system, decor, staff, artwork, balloons, roller girls, projections, etc. And music wise we're got a Funktion One system and two rooms of underground disco new and old.
Expect a night of disco fuelled Love Fever debauchery.
