The Band, Bob Dylan, Neil Young...and many others. But mostly it's the unknown musicians that I meet that inspire me and encourage me to keep on going.
Born in Montreal and now making my home in Southern Alberta, music has become a huge part of my life. I've played guitar since I was 19, but only off and on until about 1992. That's when I made my performance debut. I've since added the harmonica, some bass and percussion instruments to my repertoire and I started writing songs in 1993.
Once I played before a live audience I was hooked. Three years later, I moved to Pincher Creek, AB and 2 years after that, co-founded the legendary band "Prairie Fusion." We rocked Southern Alberta for 8 years, playing anywhere and everywhere. We were known for quality performances featuring 3-part harmony, outstanding guitar-playing by Francis Krizan, and a sound that people could dance as well as listen to.
Prairie Fusion has now been lovingly put to rest and I am now a solo performer, playing in lounges, coffee houses, folk clubs, and private events. My songwriting continues to grow and evolve, and I feel I have so much more to learn about this craft.
In my shows, I always try to engage the audience, by bringing percussion instruments along, getting them to sing along to my songs, bringing them up to the microphone, or just having fun with them! I find the energy coming from them is much more meaningful when they are an active part of the process.
I write songs that are a blend of folk, rock, blues and country, sprinkled here and there with hints of jazz, celtic and latin flavors. I write about what inspires me, makes me laugh, and how I feel the world can change. I love making music and performing for people, and I hope they enjoy what I do.
Come out to one of the shows sometime and say hi....smiling
Psst!...Here's what people are saying about Herky's shows...
At Pearl's Cafe, we have live music every week, yet never have I seen such a full house PAST closing time than when Herky Cutler performed. Talented, engaging, and full of energy, Herky got the entire audience involved. Thank you Herky!
Katelyn - Pearl's Cafe - Waterton Lakes National Park
"Herky is a genuine showman who is in touch with his
audience from beginning to end... (he) is also a great musician who
skillfully plays his guitar while his lyrics hit their target on every line,
sometimes funny and sometimes thought provoking. By the end of the show you leave feeling more like you have just been to a party, than to a concert."
Pegasus Coffee House - Bainbridge Island, WA
"Herky Cutler was fantastic and fun! He worked at getting the crowd involved and we all had an excellent time. That, and he is also a talented musician! We look forward to his return..."
Rory - Stage Right Cellars - Sandpoint, ID
"Usually, when someone plays here, I feel like I'm interupting when I run the coffee machine. But tonight I felt like I was part of the show! Herky's music was upbeat, fun and creative and the whole audience was involved. What more can you ask? This was the most fun I've had at work in a long, long time!"
Cafe Luna - Vashon Island, WA
"Another great night at the Prickly Pear Cafe! Herky Cutler was the feature performer and he kept the crowd smiling from beginning to toe tapping end. His stories were heartwarming and funny and his musicianship shone through. Including the audience in a number of songs ( like the chicken clucking ) kept everyone engaged and laughing. All told Herky provided a very entertaining and enjoyable night of wonderful, original, folk music the way we love to hear it performed."
The Medicine Hat Folk Club - Medicine Hat, AB
"Herky Cutler’s performance at our “Pass the Gavel” meeting set the stage for what we believe will be our best year ever. His music, humor and rapport with his audience made for a wonderful evening. The smiles lighting up the faces of every club member told the tale. Bravo, Herky!"
Dick Nichols, President - Okotoks Rotary Club - Okotoks, AB

"Ticklin' The Strings" by Sweet Hollywaiians
Amazing Japanese hot string band playing 1920's, 30's, 40's style hawaiian, swing, calypso, blues, italian music and originals, featuring vintage instruments.3 songs with Robert Armstrong and Tony Marcus(from Robert Crumb and His Cheap Suit Serenaders)
"The Sweet Hollywaiians have probably the best feel for this 20's music of any string band working today. They manage the rare feat of sounding relaxed even when their playing is hot, are top notch musicians with tasteful arrangements and a full, rich, warm sound.Plus, they have a nice gamut of tunes, from King Nawahi to Giovanni Vicari to Bobby Leecan. See them live, if you can, for an unforgettable experience. If you can't, buy their Cds!" ~ Terry Zwigoff
Hey Daddy-O, I love the video! What a great song performed equally great. Beautiful!!! You have risen to yonder heights before mine eyes... Keepin' the faith, always, John
Yeah...I'm playing a bar (Blue Cafe) tomorrow night, with bass, drums, electric and acoustic (me) geetars! We've been rehearsing like crazy...Ray is going electric.
