Influences
As a band we collectively listened to a lot of different bands, from a lot of different genres of music. Punk brought us together but a lot of other music helped us create what we did and perhaps one day we'll share a stage again? Till then.....eat Toast and Marmite!
Genovese started life as Her Name In Blood which began as a 3 piece band consisting of Matt Black, Dan Bancroft & Adam Davis, formed after an initial meeting discussing a love for early Alkaline Trio and So Cal punk bands led to initial rehearsals in various dark, disgusting practice rooms, while after a mere 2 months they had a handful of songs they planned to record. The resulting first E.P was called "Ashes & Embers" (recorded at Serafina Studios, Eastbourne) and became the foundations of the raw variety of Pop Punk, which fused bright melodies with lyrics telling tales of lies, deceipt, love and death.
After a handful of gigs in Hastings, Eastbourne & Brighton gaining much needed experience on the sewer circuit they then had lineup changes that involved the loss of founder member Dan and an additional guitarist to the live fold in Aggie Lau, adding intricate guitar harmonies to the buzzing distortion from the existing sound.
After more grafting came a second E.P, "Postcards from Crystal Lake" (again recorded at Serafina Studios), which added a more ambitious style of songwriting coupled with the bands first duel vocal track and a more thought out ing songwriting process. It was during the recording of this E.P that the band utilised the efforts of Ryan Cranshaw (ex Scallywags Drummer), though the two parted ways during the writing of the next batch of songs.
With the drum stool vacant once more and recording & gigs looming Dan stepped up once more to assist, while 4 became 5 with the addition of a permanent bassist in Sam Smithers, leaving Matt to concentrate on vocals. After a number of gigs including spots at the Brighton Freebut and a support gig with Linchpin in Hastings, they recently recorded E.P number 3 at a new facility in Bexhill: Sonic Avenue Studios.
The aptly titled E.P "Broken" featured the band at their best taking their influences of Jimmy Eat World, Alkaline Trio and more to offer their best songs to date. Having been on a brief period of hiatus the band are now working on their follow up to the Broken E.P, with James Bull currently on the drumstool (as well as many others!) and expect to be on the road soon after some local shows throughout the summertime.
