"This album comes extremely recommended. 8/10" Silent Ballet
'The Heritage’ is, simply put, a masterpiece of modern music...they have produced what must surely be one of the records of 2008. 6/6" Sonic Dice
"...there can be no denying that Her Name Is Calla are one of the most daring, unconventional bands the UK has to offer right now. For that alone we should all be exceedingly thankful. 8/10" Drowned in Sound
"Suffice to say, there had to be a step forward at some point, and clearly this is it. 10/10" Rockfood Magazine
"Its a terrific record in terms of both scope and achievement. 9/10" The Four Oh Five
Formed some years ago out of a desire to create music that had a more emotional core, Her Name is Calla have since expanded to a six piece, seven if you include occasional addition of cello. The music they make is the music they want to make. Encapsulating brass, strings, pianos, oddities and anything else at their disposal, they craft songs and music that have a heart. That heart may not always be the one people are used to, not the bright red shining symbol of love and hope, but a heart somehow more personal.
Touring with iLiKETRAiNS at the back end of 2007 as a four piece, they found a life they could fit into. Playing to sold out shows and finding new friends. Being immersed in the music. That year also saw the release of the 'Condor and River' on Loom, and 'A Moment of Clarity' on Gizeh, two records that won the band a great deal of critical acclaim. These were followed in 2008 with the mini-album - The Heritage. Again, the critics loved it, those that heard it loved it, and slowly more and more people caught on. Playing shows up and down the UK through 2008 the four piece gradually expanded to include cello and trumpet.
And then November hit. A show at Holy Trinity Church in Leeds signalled the end of live gigging for a while. It was time to write. Time to write their debut full-length album. Early 2009 saw the addition of violin, and experiments with accordians and out of tune organs. The material started taking shape. A number of songs were written and recorded, music which found it's way onto a limited DVD release. Collaborating with Ashley Dean AKA Broken Pixel (ex-iLiKETRAiNS) resulted in a story being told around massive live track New England as the centrepiece for this DVD.
Work continues on material for the album. There is the sense of a progression amongst the band members. Of stepping out beyond their previous output, of going further. The new album is expected later in 2009. It's a long process, and one that Her Name is Calla take no shortcuts on. The end result is something they are all very excited about. Excited about creating the music, about playing the music, and about getting back on the road again.
thanks guys. we're glad you dug the tunes. make sure you tell all your friends. haha. can't wait for the re-release. we'll definitely have to order a copy. how are you guys?-matt
might just do that! cheers for the heads up. if we ever make it to the UK, would absolutely love to share a stage. same goes if you are ever able to come down under :)
I think 45 minutes would be a lot better because your music is big and the tracks are long. People should take some time listening to it. How many people on stage again? 7?
I'm writing my Master's thesis on online marketing for musicians and bands. If you have 10 minutes left please take my survey at http://musicmate.net/survey (German version: http://musikfreund.com/umfrage) and support my work. I'd really appreciate it!
yes! finally got the dvd and all today. looooong shipment but it was worth the wait. 'a blood promise' and 'pour more oil' are both very beautiful and addicting. looking forward to the vinyl release of the heritage and i hope everything works out as great as it should. i'll also try eating nude since it seems my current idols are exercising this skill. and clearly i've got to learn how to dance from you people. haha. thank you for the good laughs.
