Herne Studios was established in 1999 as an independent music production company. Originally set-up to offer affordable recording services to musicians, the company developed over time to widen its focus to all aspects of music production.
Herne Studios is based in the South of England and offers several freelance producer/engineers who, as well as being available to work in commercial studios, have access to Herne Studios' private production suite, which provides overdubbing, editing and mixing facilities. Our producers have worked with a wide range of artists, and some of their work is showcased on this page. Please visit and support the Bands linked!
We provide the following services for artists:
Recording a Demo
Twenty years ago, a demo was a song idea played on guitar and sung, and recorded to cassette. Nowadays, the expectation is of a sound quality approaching that of a finished record, and as any artist who has been into a small studio or tried recording their own demo will know, this can be a very difficult goal to achieve.
Going into a small studio to record a demo can be a minefield - apart from varying quality of equipment and value for money, many engineers can be inexperienced and difficult to work with. Buying equipment and doing it yourself is an attractive alternative, but developing your recording abilities until you are happy with the results can take many years.
The alternative is to enlist the help of an experienced producer, with both the knowledge to get the best studio available in your price range and the ablities to get the best possible sound for your demo. Never waste money on a poor quality demo again - contact us today to enquire about our demo packages.
Prices start at just £200 per day, which includes an 8 hour session in a London Studio with Pro Tools HD3, editing and mixing of the tracks recorded, two copies of the mixes on CD-R and a full session backup in Pro Tools format on DVD-R.
Recording Masters
Our producer/engineers are available to work in any studio in the world. However, our specialisation is in recording project management; taking a recording project from the original specification and budget through to the finished master recording.
When embarking on a major recording project, there are many factors that need to be considered. Accommodation, food, studio budget, session scheduling, and much more must be considered a major distraction from the creative process. By letting a producer handle the administrative worries, the talent is free to concentrate on making music.
We hold close ties with a range of studios from Scotland to Europe, with whom we can guarantee the most favourable rates. Finding a studio to fit your budget and requirements will be easy, and takes the guesswork out of choosing a recording a studio!
In addition, all of Herne Studios' engineer/producers have access to Herne Studios' private production suite. This allows work such as editing and basic overdubs to be done outside of expensive studios, freeing up budget for other more important tasks.
Herne Studios' private production suite is located in Hampshire, approximately an hours drive from London. We do not advertise a gear list as we are not a commercial facility, please contact us if you require more information. Equipment includes AKG / Apogee / Brauner / Digidesign / Focusrite / Genelec / KRK / Neumann / TLA and more.
Mixing
Mixing is arguably the most important process in producing a good quality recording. A good mix depends mainly on two things; a capable mix engineer and a neutral acoustic environment to mix in.
When you need your project mixed to the highest of standards, we can book the best studio within budget and arrange an attended mix session. Recent studios for mixing work include Air Studios, Eden Studios and Miloco, who while boasting some of the best sounding mix rooms in London, are surprisingly affordable.
For lower budget projects, Herne Studios private facilities provide an ideal environment for mixing, offering excellent acoustics and top class monitoring from KRK and Genelec.
While good sounds can be achieved recording in the bedroom, the acoustics are rarely suited to mixing. By giving us your home project to mix, you are guaranteed results - literally. By offering an "unlimited tweaks" service, you have the peace of mind of knowing that even for unattended sessions, you will end up with a mix that fulfills its potential.
Strings
At Herne Studios, we offer a unique package for those looking for real strings on their recordings, without the budget for major studios and Musicians Union rates.
For a one-off fee, Herne Studios offers string arrangement with the facility to request changes and approve the final score. The parts will then be recorded shortly afterwards, with a 2 hour rehearsal for the players before the actual recording session. Recording sessions are usually unattended but can be attended at request. The different takes will then be edited together and sent to you in the digital audio format of your choice.
String sections usually consist of 4 players (2 Violins, Viola and 'Cello), but larger sections can be requested.
Our String packages are currently on special offer - see our website for further details!
Speech
In addition to our musical services, we offer voiceover and ADR services for film, TV and games. Our specialist engineers have extensive experience in speech recording, editing and post-production, with credits ranging from film ADR and documentary voiceovers to character speech for computer games.
Voiceovers may be recorded at Herne Studios' private production suite in Hampshire, or at a studio of convenience to the client. Additionally, our mobile recording equipment allows us to offer "on location" sessions where necessary. We provide editing and post production services as an extension to the recording sessions, providing the client with final speech files ready for implementation.
