The old ladies at the storage facility, where Heroes Will Fall rehearses, may not like the noise coming out of their storage unit…but Central Florida is certainly warming up to it. Bassist Chris Kokkinos tells us, “The other day, we were in the middle of rehearsing a song and all of a sudden all of our amps turned off. At first, we thought that we had tripped the breaker. We opened up our door, this guy and his wife were standing there, and the guy says, ‘Sorry, I had to unplug you. My wife couldn’t take it anymore!’”
With a sound that falls somewhere between hard rock and metal, Heroes Will Fall incorporates elements from both genres to add different flavors to their style and keep the songs fresh, as well as, attract fans of both genres. “We try to write different types of songs, some are more on the hard rock side, others on the metal side. In addition, we even try to mix genres within each song. Some parts are faster, aggressive, and lean towards the metal side; others are more mellow and melodic, but in the end there is a common element to all of our songs. In other words, you can still tell that you are listening to Heroes Will Fall no matter which song we’re playing,” claims guitarist Mike Allison.
With a quick listen, you’ll notice that a Heroes Will Fall song doesn’t follow that typical “verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge-chorus” format. Instead, they’ll shift parts around, or play different variations of a section, so that the first-time listener thinks that they know what is coming next…but they are often mistaken. “That doesn’t mean that our songs are 35 different riffs just slapped together. We use common themes within a song and still attempt to create reoccurring hooks and catchy choruses. They just might not fall where most people would expect them to,” says drummer John Witt.
As far as their live show is concerned, they’ve heard on more than one occasion that they are one of the tightest Central Florida bands around for their genre. They are slowly-but-surely winning over the Central Florida metal community. “As of right now, we’ve only played a handful of shows, but we’ve gotten a very positive response,” states vocalist Justin Peyatt. “Since we’ve only been in the scene for a little while, people may not know who we are at the beginning of the night, but we always seem to gain a few fans by the time we’re finished with our set.”
It’s not just Central Florida who seems to be enjoying their sound. In November 2008, they finished first on OurStage.com for both the Hardcore Rock and Metal channels with their songs “Bleedroot” and “Ad Nauseum,” respectively. Their MySpace friends are in the thousands and the friend requests just keep coming in. For 2009, Heroes Will Fall hopes to pick up some out-of-town shows and bring their sound to some other areas of Florida. But before that they have some unfinished business to attend to. “We’re currently working on a 7 song EP,” says bassist Chris Kokkinos. “We have some new songs that we have been playing out live and are excited to finally start getting them recorded so that other people can become as familiar with them as they are with our older material. We’re hoping to get it released this spring and are definitely planning to use the Internet as a sales medium to reach the most amount of people possible.” Keep checking www.heroeswillfall.com to see how the EP is progressing.
