A lot. Especially The Beatles, The Clash, The Smiths, The Band, Flaming Lips, Motown, The Pogues, The Rolling Stones, Kinks, Wilco, Hakan Hellstrøm, Dexys Midnight Runners, + the music made by our friends in Love Dance, Professor Pez, April Skies, Catastrophes, Soda Fountain Rag, Princess Niko, Kiss Kiss King Kong, Casiokids, Syme, and Hypertext, among others.
Despite not knowing remotely what they sounded like, I just knew that I had to buy this album. That’s not something I would live to regret. When I came home I popped it in the tray and pressed the play button. What I heard was the sound of one of the best bands I’ve heard till this day. Bidssometimesdance.com, article about Herr Nilsson (21. september 2009)
Herr Nilsson are almost a distillation of everything that makes quirky Scandinavian pop so damned appealing. Title track "Downhill thrill" dances a little into Of Montreal's territory in its midsection before sealing the deal with thin guitar chords, building strings, and anthemic lyrics. It was "Huskies", though, that completely won me over, four tracks into a record I was already stirred by. Itsatrap.com review of Downhill Thrill (Dec 1. 2007) (8 out of 10)
Herr Nilsson pursue their own special brand of jangly guitar pop, equally happy to lead a melody with a quiet banjo as a heavy guitar. Their influences seem diverse, from the more poppier Flaming Lips songs and country sounds of Wilco, to late Dexy’s Midnight Runners or even the harmonies of your favourite Beatles songs. Hard to describe in just a few words, their album is a must-listen for fans of pop, country, or even both… Indie-mp3.com review of Downhill Thrill (Sept 11. 2007)
If you've already snuck down for a listen to today's featured track, the festive warmth surrounding the music will have been an immediate ear perk as the instrumentation gives validation far beyond any thought of this band having too many cooks in the kitchen. www.milkmilk-lemonade.blogspot.com on “Don..t Put Your Money On My Horse” (2008)
I can hear hints of the Decemberists, Great Lakes and labelmates Professor Pez popping up in many places. (…) A fun record overall, and a terrific debut! Indiepages review of “I..m No Elvis” (11 out of 13)
The carnival atmosphere of many of his songs also remind me of the Neutral Milk Hotels of the world. There is a pleasing weirdness that keeps the songs a bit on the peripheral edge of recognition.(...) This is a really fine album of keyboard-driven folk-pop! Shmat Records review of early demos, 23. march 2004
