"You may have a charismatic lead vocalist who can sing, growl and howl, a lead guitarist that creates sonic landscapes, and a rhythm section - bass and drums - that chugs, gallops, and pumps the band along. But if there is no chemistry between these four people it simply adds up to four people making rock music - and we have enough of that. But great rock & roll defies mathematics, where if the band gel, the sum multiplies enormously.
I think the He-Shes have that magic.
Will they become great? I don't know, there is a very selfish part of me that hopes not, because they will no longer be underground, ours ... but they deserve to be recognised wider than the cool crowd, so I hope they do make it." -- Music critic and DJ Charles Leonard.
The He-Shes are a Johannesburg-based rock band formed in August 2006. Influenced by 60s garage, 70s punk and modern alternative rock, the band has grown in stature in the Johannesburg underground rock scene and developed a cult following. The group's quirky lyrics and song subject matter have also attracted the attention of the media and hip radio stations.
After almost three years of being a band, we've finally knuckled down
to release an album. To celebrate this momentous occasion we're throwing three parties. It would be nice to have you there.
18 July - Johannesburg - Alexander Theatre 1 August - Cape Town - EVOL 2 August - Stellenbosch - Klein Libertas Theatre
This Friday. Carfax. Desmond & the Tutus. Sweat X. Optimo (he's from overseas, so he must be good). And all the usual Petting Zoo DJs. Can I get a woop woop?
Check out Chris Chameleon and BAND this Thursday (20 Sept) as they rock Roxy's in Melville at 9pm.
Featuring the fabulous Chris on vocals, Warren "Waz" Leicher on bass, Duncan Shelwell on drums, and special guest Arno van Vliet on guitar ... Arno and Chris played in Blue Chameleon together back in the day!
