Nieuwe expo ism Cakehouse: A Meeting between the tragic and the funny
Humor kan voor de toeschouwer een speelse gastheer zijn om in een kunstwerk binnen te treden. De kijker wordt verleid met een op het eerste zicht eenvoudig beeld of situatie, om hem pas in tweede instantie, als hij zijn schild al heeft laten zakken, een veel minder rooskleurige en veel gelaagdere boodschap te presenteren.
Deze speelse band tussen humor en kunst spreekt ontzettend tot de verbeelding van theoretici en curatoren. Dit manifesteert zich in omvangrijke publicaties, veelvuldige themanummers van tijdschriften en steeds prestigieuzere tentoonstellingen die aan dit onderwerp besteed worden. Hiermee wordt er een rijk en gediversifieerd terrein in de kunst blootgelegd. Het inzicht in de subtiele verschillen tussen diverse benaderingen van het thema groeit, en de interpretatie en lezing hiervan wordt permanent genuanceerder, aandachtiger en lovender. We kunnen spreken van een steeds verder uitdeinend, internationaal ‘onderzoeksproject’…
Wil men hier een bijdrage aan leveren, dan is men verplicht om nauwkeurig een deel van het onderzoeksterrein af te bakenen. Het HessenHuis en Cakehouse, die voor deze tentoonstelling een samenwerking aangaan, kiezen er daarom voor zich te focussen op het brandpunt waar tragiek en humor elkaar ontmoeten. Deze twee accenten in de kunst fungeren uiteraard perfect als elkaars contrapunt.

Het HessenHuis is een platform om nieuwe artistieke praktijken in een flexibele context te tonen.
Een ruimte voor try-outs, waar nieuwe terreinen verkend worden, maar ook een plek waar het werk geconfronteerd wordt met een kritisch publiek van geïnteresseerden en professionals.
Een ruimte waar de grenzen en raakvlakken tussen beeldende kunst en andere artistieke disciplines (zoals design, architectuur, mode en podiumkunsten) afgetast worden.
Een ruimte die openstaat als werkruimte voor kunstenaars en waar het publiek kennis kan maken met het deel van het artistieke proces dat zich meestal achter de schermen afspeelt.
