Fun Date Ideas from the 50's
Going out with your steady or with the whole gang here's some popular date night hot spots from the 50's. (although I was a little kid in the 50's I remember watching my teenage sister and brother getting ready for their nights out)
Drive in Movies - show off your cool car and your date while catching the latest movie. How about "Rock Around the Clock" or "Jailhouse Rock" or a scream fest like "Attack of the Crab Monster." (I remember being in the back seat at the drive dressed in my pajamas with a box of Ritz crackers and peanut butter.)
School Dance - twist, jive or boogie at the "Hop". Some popular dances are the stroll, the mash potatoe, the swim, the twist, the hulley gulley, the watusi, the jerk. (We practiced in front of the mirror for hours before braving it in the school gym)
Record Parties - grab an arm load of 45's and practice lip synching to Connie Francis, "Lipstick on Your Collar" or "Stupid Cupid". The Supremes - how about "Baby Love" or "My Boyfriends Back" by Leslie Gore. (I remember using a butter knife as a mic - great for dramatic flourishes)
Malt Shop - chow down on burgers and fries, chocolate shake (two straws please) with a banana split to top it all off. (I still miss Schrafft's. It was the first place I was allowed to walk to to meet friends downtown.)
