Robert Rankin Walker's Blurbs |
About me:
Californian by way of New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Virginia, my mother and I along with my three sisters moved to San Diego when I was in third grade. From then on, I spent all my school years in San Diego (Imperial Beach) and summers in New York City where my Dad lived and New Hampshire with my grandparents. Oh yeah, and somewhere in that mix I wound up for a time in Orlando, Florida but I only remember the beach and the scary man at Disneyworld.
I started my musical journey in Tijuana where I lived after high school. I moved there for the experience and to fully grasp the Spanish language (not to mention cheap rent. I had a brand new house for $200 / mo!) I took up guitar playing and songwriting around this point too and played in many of the clubs and schools in Tijuana.
After living in TJ and hitch-hiking up and down Baja California for a bit - going 2,000 miles from Tijuana to Cabo San Lucas and back on only $100 and my thumb, I eventually found my way north to Sonoma Co. (45 minutes north of San Francisco) and spent the next several years playing music in bands (remember the mid-90’s band Caffeine anyone?) and becoming part of the San Francisco music scene. We actually had a good amount of success being based out of the Bay Area but still playing all over the west coast.
While still in the San Francisco bay area and after deciding the business side of music was really my calling, I began interning for the independent label Heyday Records. Hailed by Rolling Stone Magazine as “One of the ten most adventurous labels in the world.” I suddenly found myself right in the center of the independent musical universe, at precisely the right time, as the words MP3 and Dot Com were just starting to be heard. Heyday has the distinction of being one of the first record labels on the net as well as one of the first labels to ever release an enhanced CD. Over time, I was fortunate enough to move into the head spot thanks to Ron Gompertz and Pat Thomas who paved the way. I still run Heyday today, although now primarily as a music marketing and event promotions company.
A few Heyday highlights over the years have been: living in my own rockstar world as the frontman for Caffeine, working with my guitar hero Marty Willson-Piper (at age 17, he was THE guitarist I wanted to become…shit, he’s still THE guitarist to become!), David J from Bauhaus, Recording sound effects at Skywalker Sound (Lucasfilm) for various projects including Star Wars “The Phantom Menace,” but sadly, they didn’t use the recordings, smoking cigars with Steve Miller, recording a radio commercial with Merle Haggard, Interviewing Bo Diddley, hearing Heyday music almost every time I go to Rubio’s (thanks to the Duo-Tones and Paul Johnson), having John Waite’s guitarist recognize me from my old band Caffeine, Terri Nunn from Berlin opening her dressing room door wearing only her bra and playing / singing “867-5309” with Tommy Tutone (look for the video on You Tube). It’s been a wild ride.
I continue to write and play music and in the summer of 2006, Heyday began sponsoring an acoustic and intimate, in the vineyards concert series here in Temecula, California. These started as small, Storyteller types of shows with popular artists for only 100 people. We had Marty Willson-Piper of the Church, The Duo-Tones featuring Paul Johnson (Surfaris) and Gil Orr (Chanteys), Tommy Tutone (“867-5309”) and Naked Eyes “Always Something There To Remind Me.”
Now, in 2009, with a new name for the events company: Golden Crown Productions, the concerts have grown to over 900 people and we just did our first show at the Ramona Bowl for over 3,500 people! Thanks to the all the wonderful folks I’m fortunate enough to work with. My Golden Crown partners; Gregg Hassler and Don Harbour have both proven to be not only top-notch professionals but also great friends. Tim Evans with the Unforgettables, Ozzie at the California Family Life Center, the SW Temecula Rotary Club, the list goes on and on...
When I’m not busy running around chasing my kids (which is always), I read books, write, surf, hike, run and mountain bike. I’m also very much caught up in my other business venture of health and wellness, because I want to be 60 when I’m 80 and not 80 when I’m 60. Ask me about it sometime.
A million thanks to the many wonderful people who have worked for and with Heyday over the years. It’s a team effort and certainly not one I could have ever done by myself. No one person is as smart as all of us together.
