what? the folk! & Solid Earth present: Freaks, Ghouls and Graves, a Balkan (ish) flavoured Halloween (ish) knees up at the delightful St Margaret’s church in Whalley Range.

Another co-promo with the brains and muscle that brought Beats, Roots & Leaves back in May - this time tho we de-camp indoors to make the most of the Halloween theme inside a church, with face painters, ghost hunters, a bar provided by Jam Street and a fabulous line-up of musical tricker treats:

Na Zdrove
Na Zdrove is Sheffield's finest Balkan Beats, Gypsy Brass, Russian Ska, Gypsy Dub, Klezmer and Gypsy Punk night. blimey. We’ll ave some of that. We’ll be welcoming their house band and resident DJs - yes indeedy!
http://www.myspace.com/nazdrove

To Sophia
Acoustic folk'n'bass with a distinctive latin flavour, yes yes technically not balkan but who gives a monkey’s when the beats are this good. http://www.myspace.com/tosophia

7Hertz
get your ears round some cerebral spooky 'kafka-esque' jazz type folk stuff courtesy of Leeds’ 7hertz. this lot will sound mint in St Margarets. http://www.myspace.com/the7hertzband

The Random Family have been doing wonders at St Brides church in Liverpool with their own Family Folk-up events. More interestingly though is how easily the blend of breezy pastoral melodies and touching vocals that these virtuosos deliver. From one church to another. amen
http://www.myspace.com/therandomfamily1

ably assisted on the ones and twos by our resident what? the folk! musical alchemists Chris Long and Helen Sarah Vaughan.

DOORS 9PM ::: £8 donation (all proceeds go to MSF in Darfur) ::: BAR PROVIDED BY JAM STREET CAFE SERVING CASK ALES AND VINTAGE CIDER, BOTTLED BEER, SPIRITS AND HALLOWEEN SNACKS - 2AM LICENCE

On Wednesday May 14 we return to The Deaf Institute for an evening of lyrical, alternative and contemporary folk music and visual ambiance, in a modern modern setting, with pews, below a glass roof...........with Anna Kashfi, Dan Haywood's New Hawks and At Swim Two Birds who will feature a video projection of 'The London Nobody Knows'.

"The London Nobody Knows, a 1967 documentary stroll around the city with James Mason. No horseguards, no palaces, but Islington's Chapel Market, pie shops, and Spitalfields tenements. Carnaby chicks and chaps, the 1967 we have been led to remember, are shockingly juxtaposed with feral meths drinkers, filthy shoeless kids, squalid Victoriana. Camden Town still resembles the world of Walter Sickert. There is romance and adventure, but mostly there is malnourishment. London looks like a shithole".

Jimmy The Squirrel sign to Do The Dog Music!

We are happy to announce that the latest addition to the Do The Dog Music stable of bands is fast rising Nottingham based outfit Jimmy The Squirrel!

Together sine 2005, this 5 piece crew kick out a raw & rootsy, stripped down ska/reggae vibe in the vein of Chris Murray, Bedouin Soundclash & The King Blues.

Their highly infectious sound boasts heartfelt, soulful vocal harmonies underpinned by killer old school keyboard melodies & spaghetti westernesque guitar licks!

Due out soon on Do The Dog Music is Jimmy The Squirrel’s debut 4 song self titled CD EP.

You can check out one of the tracks from the EP, "Music We Throw", on the Do The Dog Music Myspace page at www.myspace.com/dothedogmusic & also the other 3 EP tracks, "This One’s For You", "Two Too Many" & "Seat Up High", plus 2 live Jimmy The Squirrel videos at www.myspace.com/jimmythesquirrel
