Her trip to Manila a few years back is probably one of the most memorable events for singer-songwriter Lala. This Indo-Pinoy descent has then captivated her audience with her disarming voice and yes, good looks. She debuted in 2007 with the release of her album Stars and the carrier single “Waitin” under Warner Music Philippines. Each song speaks of Lala’s experiences describing her youth. Her share of life’s trials and tribulations inspired her to pen her songs, which she shares in six of her 10-track album.
Lala Backtrack.
In 2002, Lala’s career began in Indonesia after winning the Miss Philippines-Indonesia beauty pageant. She then starred in a popular teen soap opera which lead her to join the band Inersia where they released an album called Bersama. She was discovered by Ronnie Henares through a music video of the said band. This landed her a record deal and immediately flew to Manila and continued to flourish her blossoming career in the Philippines.
The Lala Mantra.
“My life has never been expressed fully,” says Lala, “until I started writing it down.” Stars, a collection of heartfelt songs unravels her experiences in both life and love. Her light and easy pop sound explores her emotions that express how simple, determined and genuine she is. She has the uncanny ability to come up with effortless yet hypnotic melodies through the soothing sounds of "Stars," the bittersweet “What About You?” and the dreamy "It's You." She is able to combine an intense play of words with a distinct mature sound to “Better Off Alone,” that leaves a haunting ring to the song about moving on. Her unique and fresh twists remedy upbeat songs like “Unperfect” and “Not An Ordinary Girl” to reflect a young woman’s strength in dealing with life’s adversities. Her first single “Waitin” has playful lyrics with a catchy sound. It has become an anthem for all young women.
On Spotlight.
Onstage, she is bursting with thirst for life—always ready to stand out and give a great show with her back up band Djiwa. She plays an acoustic guitar and wows her audience with her impressive vocal range and sweet but angsty tones. The crowd is pleased with her renditions of pop classics and standards, as well as her unpredictable arrangements of Sweet Child of Mine, Change the World and her favorite, High and Dry. Lala’s interpretations are bound to be timeless and ever-changing that continues to amaze people.
International Sound.
Already, Lala is taking quite big leaps. She collaborated with another Warner Music Philippines giant Christian Bautista with the song "Unsaid," a song she wrote and originally submitted as a solo piece. "He is very famous in Indonesia. This has been a great opportunity for me," shares Lala. Christian also says, "She’s very talented; she's a perfectionist with her work. She has a great international sound. She will go places for sure. It's great working with her." In mid-2008, Lala represented Indonesia in Sing Out Asia, a non-profit organization and network of young Asians that find solutions to the problems facing all Asian today: the degradation of the environment, drug use, unequal distribution of wealth, discrimination of all sorts and corruption. Lala participated in the Singout Asia's events that were held in Taiwan, Japan, and soon Thailand.
Lala NOW.
Tune in to major radio stations in Jakarta, Indonesia to catch Lala’s single “What About You?” hitting the charts. Soon her next single along with her album will be released also soon under WARNER MUSIC INDONESIA. Lala has been nominated for "Best Performance by a New Female Recording Artist" and "Best Peformance by a Duet" (with Christian Bautista) in this year's prestigious Philippine 21st Awit Awards.
The Next Attraction.
Lala is busy writing mostly about songs of her road trips here and abroad. She is excited to share her compositions which she describes as “soft pop matched with homegrown sound mixed with a distinctly unique blend of different genres such as RnB, indie pop and country.” Looks like an exciting second album is on top of Lala’s list. Watch out for it!
