My name is Joey Borg, and I am the only member of Hibernate. I do all the production, writing, playing and most of the vocals. I prefer working alone, this way I have total creative control over the final product, however I enjoy working with other lead vocalists to switch things up.
Influences
I grew up listening to The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Cream and other 60s/70s rock. I went through a significantly long psychadelic phase as a young person, and it had a lasting effect on my productions I think. I also enjoyed heavy music for a while, such as thrash, speed metal and death metal. Following that and a brief encounter with grunge music I took up jazz, studying at York University. I quite enjoyed some of the world renowned players who taught there. It was going to raves though, in my early twenties, that I think forged what Hibernate is to the highest degree. What I do is essentially pop/mellow rock type melodies over rave orientated beats. I impose much of the above influences over what I think many people want to hear...sweet breaks or flowing housy rhythms. Also, recently I've been listening to alot of the 80s invasion British groups, such as The Cure, The Smiths and Echo and the Bunnymen - even some Duran Duran. I think its starting to show in my tunes, which is a good thing in my opinion. I don't sound exactly like anyone though, which is also a VERY good thing. My biggest criticism of the electronic scene these days is too many people are doing the same thing, with only some minor innovations. There is way too much genre prejudice, and the labels fortify this nasty element. It causes the masses to begin thinking the same way, which is unfortunate. I mean how many names do we really need for genres? Its like international politics: too many labels cause too many problems. Now I'm doing my part to change these things.
I live in Toronto, and have playing music since I was fifteen, and producing since I was 23. I am signed with a label called Radikal Records out of New York City. I've decided to join here to promote myself further, and to make some new friends. I will be uploading music periodically, and I hope you all enjoy it. Don't hesitate to message me with any questions, musical or otherwise.
