The Smiths changed our worlds, Housemartins, Beautiful South, Connells, Trash Can Sinatras, Dillon Fence, James, Railway Children, Judybats, Gene, inspired us further in the early days...our upbringings and musical eclecticism range from the Beatles, Doors, Jethro Tull and Coltrane. In fact its kind of amazing what goes into the musical stew that adds up to your so called "tastes". We are all about the indie pop, british scene..but sometimes a little CCR is all I personally need. Current bands that are pushing our inventivness are Grant Lee Buffalo, the General Store, Promise Ring, Pedro the Lion, Sun Kil Moon, Son Volt, Youth Group, and Wedding Present. If you are anything like us, then this list can morph constantly into new names and feelings...music is amazing that way.
Vibrant in the Hampton Roads music scene throughout the 90s, Hickey Necklace was started by friends over their mutual appreciation of the Smiths, and various other underground bands of the time. Bonded by the same musical taste making it easy to create original songs from the very start that helped the band stand out from the cover band scene of Virginia Beach. The first e.p. "Stupid Games" was released in 1991, with "Days To Remember Years By" following the next year. Hickey Necklace was signed to national indie label Trumpeter Records in 1993 and released "The Passion Farmer" in 1994, which can still be found haunting the back shelves of amazon.com. Tragedy in the form of the death of well-loved bass player Jay Fletcher brought the band back together in a friendship now strengthened by the loss of one of their own. Almost instantly the music took on a form of a more mature serious band in search of themselves in a world now both frightening and finite. Where once songs were sung to inspire madding crowds, now lyrics and music were being spun to create moods and feelings and well...SONGS. In 2000, Hickey Necklace released "Until She Read Spoon River" a predominately acoustic record that set a new path for the band and was nominated for various local awards. The success of Spoon River kept Sadler and Commander closer together, writing songs, and eventually led to the upcoming release of "Got Used To Lonely" due out in July of 2005. Hickey Necklace looks forward to once again taking the stage, the audience and a good time...as long as it can last.
