Biography
Hidden Number's debut release, Burn Alive, appears to be a chronicle of events surrounding several confusing experiences they encountered over the past five to twelve years. As such, the album explores various dualities and contradictions. At times audio and lyrics are presented in stark contrast, yet later seemingly disconnected concepts blend together. The majority of themes revolve around perceptions of reality and illusion, set in the context of a universe that is perhaps indifferent, but more likely hostile. Throughout Burn Alive, Hidden Number combines complexly layered vocals with analog and digital sound, creating arrangements that lightheartedly convey beauty and overwhelming impending dread. This album will serve as a charming time capsule to our future annihilated selves.
The headquarters of Magnets Large & Small was conceived and is overseen by Dean Swanson, a member of Hidden Number. The studio itself is housed within the basement level of the complex, without outside light or air. With the majority of lighting coming from cathode ray and LCD displays, the ambience allows clients to focus directly on their performances without outside distractions. It was in this environment that Hidden Number finally conceded that they would release a collection of works to the public at large, filled the studio with aether, and made one final push towards completion of the album involving a collection of technologies they had acquired over the years such as food pills and cryogenics.
The three founding members of Hidden Number—guitarist/keyboardist/engineer Dean Swanson, bassist Joe Stuhff, and guitarist Shawn Diaz—originally hail from Las Vegas, having moved to Seattle only after making disturbing discoveries of an unexplained logical system while on an expedition through the wilderness of Nevada. Leaving a variety of music projects behind, the band picked up drummer Kai Strandskov via a mutual contact and avid collector of the arcane, and entered their second epoch in Seattle. With the help of keytarist Richard Weisner, the band set out to record their studies in an audio format. Now with the completion of their debut album, Burn Alive, the band is joined by keyboardist/guitarist Josh Anderson for the third phase of an experiment only slowed by the compression of a shock wave.
