About me: High and Dry is a documentary profiling the history of Tucson, Arizona's eclectic music scene. The past two decades have seen a number of singular talents emerge from Tucson, including Giant Sand's Howe Gelb, who has been called "the godfather of the alt-country movement," seminal blues slide-guitarist Rainer Ptacek, and original cow punk Al Perry.
The city has also spawned more popular acts including Calexico, the Supersuckers and Machines of Loving Grace. Some of these bands reached the big time but selfdestructed under the pressure of a music career they just weren't ready for, while others still make a successful living from their music, without the support of a major label or the mainstream music industry. High and Dry tells these musicians' stories, while giving insight into the choices they made along the way.
Drawing upon rare archival material, as well as live performances and exclusive interviews with band members, the film provides a unique view of Tucson and its music scene. More than just a whos who of Tucson music, High and Dry is a film about success and failure and what those terms really mean in the music business, and in life.
Who I'd like to meet: Film and music lovers/goers. Folks interested in documentaries and the southwest.
People who like the desert and Tucson.
Hey Mike!
I loved the movie tonight! So glad I finally got to see it! Makes me really miss Tucson... you captured its heart and soul! I so foundly recall nights at the DPC, The Rock, Club Congress, etc... you really nailed it with your movie. No one else could have made that picture the way you did! Your hard work and dedication really paid off. Thanks for the memories! I'm gonna go dig out my Doo Rag Cds...Love, Laura : )
Hey, thanks for the add--glad you found me! Your film sounds great and I would love to see it...such fantastic bands in Tucson (then AND now), I miss 'em a lot. Looking forward to seeing it!
What does human induced climate variability and climate change portend for the future of desert rock in Tucson?
And to follow the neo-Marxist line of thinking, will the continuing desiccation of Tucson produce corresponding changes in the soundscape of desert rock?
Can we learn something about what the future holds by examining the soundscape of even drier regions of the globe? Do the rock sounds emanating from Dammam and Riyadh, for example, give us some inkling about what lies on the horizon for Tucson?
our future has always been writen in our past.............where would we be without documentation, or the people on the front lines recording history in the making. Thank you for your contribution to preservation and education!
I have an itch to see High & Dry again right now. Sometimes there's nothing like seeing a bunch of old friends from Tucson on video when you are stuck in NY. Will I have to fly to Portland? :) Anyway, Happy New Year. Thanks again for making a great film.
