Influences
Johnny Cash, Chris Whitley, Sam & Dave, The Blues Brothers, Jesus & Mary Chain, Ass Machine, Parliament Funkadelic, Weird Al, Heart, The Murmurs, Big Wreck, Ian Thornley, Big Sugar, Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Bonnie Raitt, Bob Seger, Matt Good, Jeff Buckley, Black Flag, The Charlie Daniels Band, Willie Nelson, The Cult, AC/DC... and everything we listen to.
High Heels Lo Fi was born when Paisley Rae was ranting in MySpace about needing to start a band, and Cynthia Gould responded in a fit of positively charged insanity. No matter that neither of them knew how to play guitar, they just started learning fast. Their music is a cocktail of poetry and blues, with garnishs of glam, rock, cheese, booze, and hilarity.
During their first year they played Clinton's, The Cameron House, Hugh's Room, the Renaissance Cafe, and the Toronto Small Press Book Fair... amusing and impressing audiences with their raw bluesy songs and hilarious onstage style.
(Imagine a pared back Barenaked Ladies with a dash of Tenacious D, a whiff of Big Wreck, and a drop of Stompin' Tom. But with chicks.)
But then they realized that drums & bass were needed to fill out the sound. New recruits Pelayo Matute (bass) and Patricia Humphreys (drums) were dragged (kicking and screaming) into the band.
The band is now rejigging all of their existing songs for four people, and practicing like crazy.
Here is a very unflattering shot from our first rehearsal:
We'll be starting to book shows in July - please give us a shout if you'd like us to play at your gig!
Thanks to Pelayo Matute for a photo from our first show!

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING...
...I can definitively say that I haven't quite seen anything like this dynamic duo. Their bio tells it straight: formed on a whim, without any experience playing guitar, Cynthia Gould and Paisley Rae have taken to the stage, blending their spoken word skills with a healthy dash of wry, dirty humour and bluesy rock. It's a combination that works better than it might sound on paper, and the overall effect, between the stories and the sing-alongs, is that it's more of a performance show than a concert. The ladies come equipped with songbooks to facilitate the hilarity, which involves terribly fun drinking game songs (seriously; words to drink at between singing)! Now if that isn't an invitation to drink and be merry, I don't know what is...
It's not all fun and games; there are moments that ring a little more serious and true. But mostly, Cynthia and Paisley are playing for smiles and laughs. And that suits me just fine. Part poetry, part amusing life stories and all sass, High Heels Lo Fi is definitely worth checking out.

Sounds like wind blowing in a wheatfield, train rolling down the line, rain coming down on a old tin shed, steel, wire and a rusty heart. Boots of leather and dust and ash. Mollasess and coal and stone. Wedding rings and buried bones of love broken and burnt. Tales and the footprints, ravenswings and souls are earnt."
