Influences
Keeping true to the spirit of indie, we cover a vast range of genres. As well as what most people would define as indie proper (The Smiths, The Libs, Sonic Youth, Klaxons, Pixies, Oasis, The Cure, Radiohead, Interpol, Bloc Party, Franz, bands the NME would like etc etc), we also cover the more leftfield side of the genre: from the alt-country, slo-core ramblings of Will Oldham, Low, Ryan Adams and Devendra Banhart to the most expansive post-rock like Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Slint and Sigur Ros. Not to mention the rantings of art-punk, post-punk and post-hardcore from The Blood Brothers to Joy Division to Gang of Four; to the American indie of Pavement, Modest Mouse and Neutral Milk Hotel; to the most bleepy lovely electronic music such as Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada; to the alt-hop of the Anticon label and cLOUDDEAD. This is not forgetting people like Iggy Pop, The Velvet Underground, The Beatles, Dylan, Bowie et al! All washed down with a healthy dollop of jazz, metal and electronica.
The High Society AKA High Soc is the University of Nottingham's Alternative and Indie Music Society and is here to satisfy your indie urges whilst you are at Nottingham University.
If we're being honest, we know that the term 'indie' is near useless. As is the amorphous 'alternative', for that matter. But heck- it's all we've got- and we need some totem, no matter how vague, to organise our little society around.
To that end, we welcome anyone who considers themself a fan of indie music into our fold- however they define that troublesome term. We truly, honestly, absolutely, totally believe we have plenty to offer to anyone who considers themself an indie fan whether their favourite magazine is NME or The Wire; their favourite group Arctic Monkeys or Lightning Bolt. The discounts on gigs and clubnights across the indie spectrum (organised by Highsoc or otherwise) mean that you'll easily earn your money back- but there's more to us than financial gain; plenty of current and former members will testify that they've made some of their best friends through Highsoc.
But if you're a member and you don't think we're giving you what you want, let us know; come and DJ at one of our events; suggest a band you'd like to see. Because you are Highsoc, after all.
Forthcoming shows... .. ..
Hey! We looked for you after the gig, came back into the tent...your banner was soooo ace..that was you right? I couldn't see properly, had the nerves of being on that stage. Scary stuff. Anyhhoo, wanted to say hello and see you soon we hope!! WMsxxxx
