After Department S and Purple Hearts came....
High Zierra. The name was a bastardised version of the title of a 1941 Humphrey Bogart movie 'High Sierra'.
The band came out of the ashes of the mess that was Department S in 1982 and lasted about 18 months. 3 members of Dept S were joined by Gary Sparks of The Purple Hearts on drums and young bass wizz kid Perry Barnet.
This was a new musical direction for all involved, having become tired of loud rock guitars, HZ were looking for a more poppy/soulful sound, captured perfectly on 'Every Other Tuesday' (A song about signing on the dole and seeing a girl you fancy while you're there!). The Spectre had origionally been an Instrumental developed for later Department S gigs, but never recorded by them.
High Zierra played gigs around the country, with the likes of Jah Wobble, nearly got signed but lost the will to fight .. several knock backs.
The songs contained herein are demos recorded during that 18 months. Feel free to download them if you wish.
