A Brief History Of Hijak Oscar
The band formed in August 2005 after a drunken conversation between Tim Fox and Emma Keaveney-Roys within the belly of the Evil Eye Lounge, York, UK.
In 2001 Mr Fox started to develop a solo act which incorporated a heavy emphasis on very raucous, rhythmic harmonica style alongside brutal lyrics and aggressive vocals, his "born in the wrong era" blues vocals were perfectly complimented by Miss Keaveney's obscure lyrics and sultry voice.
Mr Fox and Miss Keaveney-Roys were heavily involved within the growing York acoustic scene and were subsequently drawn into many projects with many of York's singer/songwriters.
Next to be recruited was a musical giant (in stature) Carl Hetherington, piano maestro. Mr Hetherington has always been involved in music. He has developed a very distinctive style, which incorporates blues/jazz, and rock 'n' roll signatures that are very infectious making your feet start tapping without your consent.
Then came Mark Meilack. An extraordinary bass player. Mark didn't have many friends growing up and so learnt to play bass instead, and it paid off. With his honed skills mark has saved the world on several occasions each one utilising a fretless or 8 stringed bass mamma to defeat the enemies from the depth between.
At this point Hijak Oscar was taking shape but the rhythm section was missing the pigskin beater. It wasn't long until Mr Dave "I'll only play the one gig" Hartley was found. After 89 gigs and counting he's defiantly the loudest part of the band and getting louder! Dave, once referred to as York's hardest working drummer, has been involved in the York scene since he was 15 providing the driving force for many bands and deafening many musician along the way.
Last and not least the final member to join was Mark Wynn. No strings attached ride the rhythm to excruciating heights of climax and can calm a room with a soulful tune. Mr Wynn was not the first guitarist for Hijak but he was the perfect addition to a now momentum gathering band. Over the past few years he has developed a very passionate performance which is essential to the theatrical nature of Hijak Oscar.
Hijak Oscar have played all over the country supporting bands such as Alabama 3, Son of Dave, Jack Penate, Mostly Autumn, Shed Seven and many more as well as playing an impressive amount of headliners in and out of the York music scene.
Hijak have also featured The Sandman Magazine, and has a growing fan base throughout the country.
In late 2006 Hijak self produced their debut album, "Hijak Oscar" which has sold over 2000 copies in the UK with absolutely no distribution or label deals helping them along the way.
Throughout 2006-2007 Hijak Oscar have performed several times live on BBC Radio, and have been spotted besmirching Channel 4's Sunday morning output. This will only spread the music faster and farther than could ever be imagined by a band spawned in the musical graveyard of the North.
So what's happening in 2008? We've enjoyed the Hellbound tour, seeing lots of your pretty faces in many of the country's fine cities. Emma and Mark Wynn have parted ways with the band to pursue new directions of all descriptions. We wish them well on their way! And onboard the train have stepped Ms. Gaby Milner and Sir Robert Gambell on vocal and guitar duties respectively.
To come: the release of "Black Sheep Money Box", Hijak's second album! We're working on it...
All aboard the Hijak speed train. We're all going straight to hell! Enjoy!
"Hijak Oscar are the band you'll meet at the cross roads and without a second thought sell your soul for." (The Talk)
