Influences
I grow up hearing the big collection of great music that my family had in my house. This collection includes all kind of music as Classic, Jazz, Popular, etc., listening seriously for the first time in my life Errol Garner, Roy Eldridge, Harry James; classic music from Jachaturian, Tchaikovsky, Gershwin, and the Cubans Ernesto Lecuona, Bola de Nieve, Vicentico Valdes, Adolfo Guzman and the great pianist Frank Emilio Flynn.
I have been inspired as well listening compositions made by Chucho Valdes among others.
This music has been influenced by most of the contemporary classical music and traditional forms of the Cuban music: Ignacio Cervantes, Manuel Saumell, Matamoros, and the styles of Americans jazz pianists like Bud Powell, Errol Garner, and Herbie Hancock.
I tried to embrace different genres of music and influences from Jazz to Caribbean and Cuban music.
I made this myspace background at
Multi JUNO Award winner 2007 and 2005 (“From the Heart” and “New Danzon” Contemporary Jazz Album of the Year). Best Latin Jazz Artist and Best Big Band of the Year by the National Jazz Awards 2007 and 2008. GRAMMY Nominated (Best Jazz Instrumental Solo:” Hilario Duran and his Latin Jazz Big Band). Best Latin Jazz Artist of the Year 2006 by The National Jazz Award, and JUNO nominated 2002 and 2006 (“Havana Remembered” and “Perspectiva Encuentro en la Habana” CDs), Hilario Duran, is the latest virtuoso Jazz pianist emerges from Havana, Cuba.
After two internationally released solo albums “Francisco’s Song” (1996), and “Killer Tumbao” (1997, featuring a hosts of Cuban musical giants as Tata Güines and Changüito), Hilario Duran decided to move to Canada with his family and released the “Habana Nocturna” album, “… a round – trip ticket from Cuban music to Jazz and back…”
Since his move to Canada, Hilario Duran has become an integral and important part of the Canadian music scene, and he is an invaluable member of the Jazz Faculty at Humber College, acting as both and adjunct Piano Professor and Ensemble Director.
Hilario is currently working as a composer and arranger with the classical ensembles of Gryphon Trio, and Quartetto Gelato.
In 2005, Hilario formed his explosive Big Band Orchestra with the top Canadian and Cuban musicians in Toronto being one of the highlights of The Distillery Jazz Festival”, “Autoworkers Assembly Hall Big Band Festival” (Port Elgin), and “Sound of Toronto Jazz Series”, critically acclaimed by the press.
Hilario Duran last recording “From the Heart” is a tribute to all the great Cubans conductors like Rafael Somavilla, Armando Maria Romeu, and many other great composers, arrangers, and musicians of the first order…
Hilario Duran is celebrating at this moment the recognition as one of the recipients of 2007 “Latin Jazz USA Chico O’farrill Lifetime Achievement Awards”.
