Local hills resident and multi media artist Roderick Price has been busy working on what he calls his ‘sound track for the hills’. ‘The Hills are Alive’ is an immersive sound project that takes the listener on a sonic journey through the Shire of Yarra Ranges. Over the past few years Rod has taken field recordings from various parts of the Shire, from Warburton and Healesville to Silvan, Belgrave, Sassafras and many other locations representative of both the natural and urban surroundings. Rods audio work references styles of experimental music, in particular that of music concrete. ‘The Hills are Alive’ is composed of highly abstracted field recordings that are manipulated and processed along side electronically generated sonic material. The initial presentation of this project to the local hills audience in 2007 was well received. Since then the project continues to grow and receive support from local and international interest. Rod continues to take field recordings and has more recently been recording local musicians and choirs to be included as part of the project.
Aesthetically Rods work is dark and dense and sits within the genres of electro acoustic, dark ambient and industrial electronic music. Rod has been lucky enough to have received both state and local support for the project and for that he is truly greatful and would like to thank VIC Arts, The Foundation For Young Australians, The Shire of Yarra Ranges and Burrinja for sharing the vision.
