Mission:
NYLOC exists to promote the growth of operational unity and political consciousness among individuals and organizations within the New York Hip Hop community.
History:
The National Hip Hop Political Convention aimed to address problems facing the Hip Hop generation and community across the United States of America by sponsoring local organizing committees and a national convention every two years.
In 2004, at Rutgers University in Newark, NJ from June 16-19th, the first convention was held to create a political agenda for the Hip Hop generation. As a result, delegates from across the country developed a 5 Point Agenda to function as the founding principles of a political Hip Hop movement.
Over 6000 people attended that historic conference.
Currently, NYLOC is a part of the Peoples Justice
Campaign for Police Accountability and Community Control of law enforcement.
NYLOC working with HipHop Sustains to plan the NYC HipHop Economic
Conference in March 2009. How do we struggle against economic containment? How do
we build resources for uncompromising and effective political work.
NYLOC is also a part of the HipHop Sustains
Campaign. With Soul Survivors, HipHop Media Lab & 5th Element - the
campaign focuses on environmental sustainability through HipHop culture and
education. In the summer of 2007 - we held the world's first Solar Powered HipHop Concert in Atlanta Georgia at the US Social Forum.
NYLOC has screened Bryon Hurt's HIPHOP: BEYOND BEATS &
RHYMES. A new independent film on sexism and homophobia in Rap music
culture.
In Partnership with the Safiya Nuh Washington Foundation, we hosted the first annual Black Liberation to HipHop Film Festival at Columbia University in February 2008.
In Partnership with the Student Government and Alumni Association of City College's Center for Worker Education we hosted our first annual Malcolm X to HipHop Film Series in May 2008.
