The Maine Academy of Modern Music, the presenter of the wildly popular Rock Camp programs in Portland, is announcing the launch of the Hip Hop Summer Camp. The camps are week-long day camps from 10am - 3:30pm at several different New England locations.
Heading up the camp is MAMM Hip Hop Program Administrator Todd the Rocket Richard, an accomplished educator, DJ, producer, and drummer. the Rocket is a co-founder of wepushbuttons, a Maine-centered hip hop and electronic music advocacy organization and forum. He is also on the Board of Trustees for the Portland Music Foundation. He will be assisted by instructor Gabe FM, one of Portland’s most acclaimed and respected DJs, known for his work with mainehiphop.com and internationally-recognized hip hop MC/vocalist Sontiago.
The Hip Hop Camp is geared towards high school-aged students from 12 - 18 years and is open to individuals of all interests and styles. “We want everyone to know that they are welcome, whether they are curious or experienced. Hip Hop has pervaded modern music... it’s everywhere! It’s more than just a music; it’s a way of expressing yourself,“ says the Rocket.
The camp program focuses on three main elements of hip hop music: MCing, DJing, and production. Students will get to take part and make contributions in all of these areas, while also having the opportunity to spend focused time in areas of their particular interest. The goal of the camp is to collaboratively work on writing, recording, producing, arranging, and mixing a group track, with a finished product having been achieved by the end of the camp week.
From rock musicians who want to learn more about integrating programmed beats in to their songs, or budding turntablists and MCs, the Hip Hop Camp has opportunities for students to learn more about hip hop and it’s influence on the music of today.
