About Hip Hop As A Movement Week
Hip Hop As A Movement Week 2008: Element Fusion - A True Skool Evolution

Erupting as a powerful social movement in the Bronx in the 1970's, Hip Hop has since proven to be dynamic multicultural force crossing socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic borders.

The Multicultural Student Coalition is proud to organize & create a collaborative effort between various campus groups and community members to present Hip Hop As A Movement Week 2008. Building off the success of last year, we plan to take the movement to the next level by showcasing hip hop and its fusion with other musical genres, politics, global movements, the environment, community, art, and academia. This truly dynamic week includes a lineup that presents each of these unique fusions with a variety of discussions, panels, art galleries, spoken word events, films, and concerts.

THE FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE YEAR!!!
LYRICAL SANCTUARY @ UW-MILWAUKEE
WEDNESDAY, MAY 9th

-WRITER'S WORKSHOP (6:00-8:00pm)
Multicultural Student Lounge, Union 198
Dust off that poem-in-progress and join a group of blossoming writers
as we discover how to express ourselves on paper. Perhaps you'll come
up with something to share at the Open Mic!

-OPEN MIC (8:00-10:30pm)
Fireside Lounge
Our open mic series welcomes poets, singers, visual artists, and other
performers to express themselves before a captive audience. Come
express yourself!

(Both events will take place on the 1st floor of the UWM Union--2200
E. Kenwood Blvd.)

Featured poet and workshop facilitator
PATRICIA SMITH
Poetry slam champion, author and one-time finalist for the Pulitzer Prize as a journalist. She is lauded by critics as "a testament to the power of words to change lives." Her workshop will focus on the power of words and share the lessons she has learned as a writer and a performer. She will later return for a performance during the open mic. Come witness Smith's healing through words and performance, and stay for the closer—local rapper, ONESELF.

Hosted by NAIMA ADEDAPO
Music by CIGARETTE BREAK (backing band for Black Elephant)
Live Art by RAS AMMAR

FREE and open to the public
Complimentary snacks and beverages will be provided

Lyrical Sanctuary takes place every 2nd Wednesday of the month.
Sponsored by UWM Sociocultural Programming, Still
Waters Collective and The Multicultural Student Center.

Great line-up of events and a great idea. This type of progressive rhetoric is what's missing in today's Mtv-inspired pop culture. I've already made it to a couple events and will def check out the Coup tomorrow night. I'd also like to get involved next year, if there's a place for an indie producer/engineer.

Peace,
Taxpayer
