HIP magazine is the name of a local underground subculture fanzine that was published in L.A. during the late 80's/early 90's by Vladik Cervantes. It went into local distribution after he was given an interview with the U.K. punk band, GBH. HIP quickly gained local notoriety and even received a following as far away as Italy, France, Brazil, Portugal, Spain, Germany, and the United Kingdom.
Also around this time, the only real original gothic niteclub, The Krypt, finally closed its doors for the last time. In response to the absence of a good niteclub, HIP opened The Reptile House. A darker alternative to the alternative mainstream.
Just to name a few examples of many, HIP gained attention on radio stations (K-XLU 88.9), other magazines (Foetus Acid, Zombie Zoo, Fringe F***), inside album sleeves (Ex-VoTo), in books (Mick Mercer's Gothic Rock Book), on the Internet, and now,..it's on MySpace!
