Scene 1. Exterior Shot.
I was born in Australia, from The Netherlands, living in London, via Berlin, who was sadly too young to experience the 80’s properly. This was discovered in May of 1993.
Scene 2. Interior Shot.
I produce//VJ moving image as "mental hygiene" and start backwards with raw footage.
Scene 3. Interior Shot
Between 1940 and 1970, more than 3,000 "Social Guidance" films were produced. Drive-in cinema's had a viewership of over 40-million people and American classrooms darkened as this "life adjustment cinema" was screened to children.
Coronet films - the"mental hygiene studio" - in East Hollywood released a film every 4.2 working days.
These films, handbooks of conformity, Illustrate social engineering- informing the viewer how they “should” live, thus constructing their identity.
It is here, in this sanitised version of "society", that we see the "smiling housewife" on valium, a suburban horror story.
These orphans works, neglected, with no custodian copyright owners were not meant to preserved- otherwise known as “disposable films”.
Please be a voyeur.
The public domain is my flea market and via this archival intervention I re-contextualise the media, reconstructing the "American dream" to that of a nightmare.
Closing Scene:
I am playing HIDE AND SEEK- hunting for screens, monitors, floors that are ceilings, ceilings that are floors, walls, doors, curtains, alley ways, underground subways, churches, castles, cloaks and really, REALLY big umbrellas.
