The Hong Kong International School’s Film Club, led by five seniors and their Faculty Advisor Richard Friedericks, has already held three film festivals, showcasing local student films. This year, Co-Presidents of the Film Club Indrayudh Shome, 17, and Scott Bassett, 18, have decided to open the festival to all ages and all places. They have also waived all submission fees. “Our goal is to find and interest as many filmmakers, both established and aspiring, in rediscovering the spirit of filmmaking as an expressive art. There are literally no costs beyond paying the postage to send your film, and very few barriers. We won’t necessarily be looking for the highest budget or most polished productions – rather, we’ll be selecting a wide variety of films to celebrate the diversity in expression and filmmaking.” explains Shome. Film Club Secretary Daniel Quinn, 18, interjects: “We’re trying to turn the festival from an HKIS dominated event into something with a much broader spectrum.” So far, the Film Club seems to be achieving its goal. Filmmakers ranging from their teens to their 50’s and out of Denmark to Chicago have answered the call. The submissions have been narrowed down to fill a seven hour festival. The full schedule is as follows.
FULL SCHEDULE:
1:15PM
Reception/Refreshments
Let’s Talk by Ram Madhvani, India [FEATURE]
Radhika Sareen is pregnant and the baby is not her husband's. If she tells her husband, how will he react? What will he do? The film unspools from Radhika's mind as she imagines her husband's possible reactions to her predicament. The structure of alternative realities borrows from a traditional musical form, the "Thumri", where a single thought is expressed in a multiplicity of moods… Riveting performances with a realism and truth unsurpassed in modern Indian cinema.
3:30PM
212 by Anthony Ng, USA [FEATURE – Not Competing]
Living in matchbox apartments and working mundane jobs in New York City, three sets of urbanites struggle to connect with each other and find love in the digital age.
5:30PM
Last Stop For Paul by Neil Mandt, USA [FEATURE]
Filmed at locations all over the world and using a cast of real people in not so real life situations, director Neil Mandt and his verite crew capture the journey of Charlie and Cliff, two American bathroom supplies salesmen who travel all over the world in order to spread the cremated remains of their friend Paul with their last stop at the annual full moon party in Thailand. Last Stop For Paul is an unexpectedly enriching comedy that fascinates as easily as it charms.
