Bio
We are Hobo Chang, a five piece original roots, soul, reggae band from Wivenhoe in Essex. We have played at various events, gigs, festivals, house parties and gigged the obligatory dives that can make or break a band. We have been lucky to share the stage with some fantastic bands and artists, namely Easy Star Allstars, Da Fugatiz, John Cooper Clarke, Toots & the Maytals, The Vibrators and many more. We have a strong local following and support from press and radio and have received airplay several times on BBC Radio 6 music. We self-produce our own EPs and merchandise to sell at gigs and our debut album Smalltown Troubles is due for release late summer 2012 East Anglian - Daily Times "pure entertainment" Electric Roulette - "There's a sniff of Bristol about them (Portishead, Massive Attack) while still retaining a certain sixtiesness… I thought I was gonna hate them, but after hearing Eulogy, So low blues and finding out they put a John Cooper Clarke poem to music… man what's not to like." John Cooper Clarke - "They are a fantastic band, one of the great unsigned, you know best kept secrets, they're great them...." -

Reincarnating Mr. Flagler
I have soared
Beyond my current reality
Escaping my hunter
On the edge of insanity
A lover
That takes my breath away
I breathe in with great curiosity
Trapped
Within a cage of conspiracy
I will never be
Consciously
Aware of everything I am
I will survive
The old phantoms that creep in my sleep
Submerged
I am covered with his spirit
Ecstasy of laughter
Has accompanied me graciously
On this journey
Of raving madness
I must remain free. ©

Starting out in the early 00's essex based Hobo Chang have been causing a stir across the South East ever since. Fusing together influences from blues, jazz, reggae and ska, they have created a powerful, earthy sound, transcending conventional categorisation.
With a vibe that is consistent yet constantly evolving, and with them citing influences as diverse as Captain Beefheart, John Coltrane, Billie Holiday and Lee "Scratch" Perry (to name but a few) it is no wonder that the Hobo Chang fan base is diverse and ever expanding.
