Interests

  • General

Bass guitar. Fighting evil. Rooting for the underdog. Completing my anthropological study of Austin's Mississippi Mafia. Spending time with my girlfriend. Good books, good conversation, good music. History. The Future. Today. Traveling. Learning new things about myself and the world around me. And last, but not least by any stretch of the imagination, being a good dad to my kids.
  • Music

Beatles, Stones, Who, Rush, Wilco, Elvis Costello, Willie, Waylon Jennings, Doug Sahm, Dwight Yoakum, King Crimson, Yes, Militant Babies, Minutemen/Firehose, REM, Talking Heads, Spoon, AC/DC, the Police, Zeppelin, My Morning Jacket, Black Sabbath, Radiohead, Pink Floyd, Kings of Leon, The New Pornographers, Townes Van Zant, Roky Erickson/Thirteenth Floor Elevators, Yo La Tengo ... I could go on and on and on ...
  • Movies

I don't watch movies nearly as much as I should. In the last year or two, I've liked things like Black Snake Moan, Deathproof, The Pursuit of Happyness, You're Gonna Miss Me, Casino Royale, Little Miss Sunshine and the Constant Gardener, Batman, Iron Man ... Like I said, I should probably see more movies.
  • Television

When I had cable, I'd watch the History/Discovery channels, VH1 Classic, Colbert/Stewart, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Entourage, Star Trek reruns, Cops. Lately, I've been watching shows about money, making money, flipping houses and baking cakes. Ocassionally I'll watch things like football games, Family Guy/Simpsons occasionally. Oh, and the weather. Always.
  • Books

History and historical fiction. Old-school sci-fi. 20th Century American literature. Recently, I've been enjoying Elmore Leonard, Joe R. Landsdale, Joseph Conrad, and Frederik Pohl, among others. Cereal boxes, shampoo bottles and soap wrappers are always a good diversion.
  • Heroes

    Richard Galloway.

About me:

.. I play bass in the Summer Wardrobe, who you can check out via the link in my Friends section. Please buy our record; we're working on getting the next one out even as I'm writing this. I've been also playing with the Naysays, who are also listed in my friends section. We'll have an EP out soon. The Naysays formed out of the wreckage of the Fighting Brothers McCarthy 1.0; if you're lucky, you can catch us playing with the Brothers from time to time now that we've kissed and made up. By day, I used to work for a very large, well-known company. Now I work for a sort-of-large, well-known company. I've got two great kids, an awesome girlfriend and a ton of great friends. I've lived in Austin 23 years, which is longer than I've lived anywhere else.

Who I'd like to meet:

Geddy Lee. I mean, hell, I've already met Watt.

Since Jonny's playing with The Breathers for this one it's what... 4/7ths bandmates/bandmates' mates? Which I think makes it pretty much a family obligation that you attend!

I like "I Need You" way more than Freebird, but yeah... Freebird. Good music is good.

I really should have quit at Lovejoys, but then we ventured to Casino and ended up at old faithful...Club Default. Thanks for the light and the conversation though, good to see you Mister Martay.

  • Mar 5 2008 2:54 AM

I don't need no mace, I got a big can o' Duron to scare all the boys away! So I guess I'll be seeing you on Thursday.

I'm playing tomorrow, at Emo's Lounge, 2nd of 3. It'll be just me solo because our bass player is stuck on trial. (He's a lawyer btw, not a criminal, as far as I know).

  • Feb 22 2008 7:01 AM

I know, I remembered the next day...I swear!
    Sorry I missed your show...

Oh wait. Sorry, it was only a couple hours ago...does this excuse sound any more lame when I use it?

I'm working and I'm hungover. Titz.

Sorry I couldn't make it to the Carousel last night.
John said you guys were fantastic!
  • Feb 7 2008 10:04 PM

Aw c'mon . . . at least you guys have distribution and some glowing record reviews from foreign press. I've never even been to NYC, much less on stage at the Bowery Ballroom. I know live bands suck, but at least we don't have 16 turntables on stage.
