The Hogtown Syncopators are a five piece band that play traditional jazz, swing and jump. With an instrumentation of two guitars, violin, standup bass and snare drum (all of the members sing, too), the Hogtown Syncopators play lively, skillful jazz from a time when jazz was fun. They draw their repertoire from the classic recordings of Louis Armstrong, Django Reinhardt, the Boswell Sisters, Louis Jordan, Bessie Smith and others, as well as their own original material. This young band is an all-star group, whose members have worked with such jazz luminaries as Dave Brubeck, Peter Appleyard, Jane Bunnett, Jeff Healey, Rob McConnell and Diana Krall.
The Hogtown Syncopators came together around a weekly residency at Graffiti's in Kensington Market in December 2004. James Thomson, bassist, invited guitarist/vocalist Mike Daley to join him and fellow guitarist/vocalist Jay Danley at their regular Wednesday evening slot. The trio's chemistry was immediately apparent and Terra Hazleton (snare drum, vocals) and Drew Jurecka (violin, vocals) from Jeff Healey's Jazz Wizards joined the fray not long after. The newly minted ensemble then set to work crafting clever instrumental and vocal arrangements of the classic jazz, jump and swing music that they love. With a full length CD in the works, the Hogtown Syncopators are set to make their mark on the Canadian trad jazz scene.
