GLEN ALLEN, VA - Celebrating its 150th anniversary, Hohner, Inc. awarded
Flaco Jimenez with a commemorative accordion recognizing his lifelong
achievement in the world of Conjunto music. Hohner's international and
U.S. accordion product managers, Horst Fausel and Gilbert Reyes, presented
the instrument to Flaco during the Tejano Conjunto Festival in San Antonio
on May 10, 2008.
It has been said that what B.B. King is to the blues or George Jones
is to traditional country, Grammy-winning accordionist Flaco Jimenez is
to the world of Tex-Mex Conjunto, While there are many masters of the
accordion along the Texas-Mexican border, none but Flaco have toured the
world over or recorded with major pop, rock and country artists. By all
accounts, he is an international icon for the accordion-fueled Conjunto
genre. The Hohner accordion has been Flaco's signature sound and has been
a part of his family's tradition including his grandfather Patricio Jimenez,
and his legendary father Don Santiago Jimenez Sr.
Flaco's Conjunto style is derived from many cultural backgrounds, spanning
from its Tex-Mex roots to honky-tonk country, rock'n'roll and Tejano.
His unique accordion playing has earned him five Grammy Awards, and he
continues to inspire accordionists around the world.

I like variety and after reviewing a couple of Rockabilly albums I was ready for this - a Russian quintet! The Gagarin Brothers' music is a wildly entertaining mix of Rockabilly slap bass, 60s music from the instro rock of the Ventures and swinging bands my parents danced to, crooner type and jazzy material - all the while incorporating a hefty dose of Russian, Jewish and Eastern European music including Gypsy Jazz. While the 14 titles printed on the CD insert are in English, the Gagarin Brothers exclusively sing in Russian (and that's probably a good choice!). Alexei Cekatskii is an exceptionally good vocalist with an almost operatic voice, prominently standing out in the excellent mix of guitar, upright bass, drums and accordion - all skillfully mastered. The sound is perfect, too! Bassist Dmitry Ilyin can slap with the best of them all the while being very tasteful when it comes to the jazzier offerings. Gitarrist Alexei Andreev is in a class by himself, too. Extra hot is the dynamic opener "International Panorama" with space-age effects. Check out the Tango of "Beauty Queen", the hoppin' "Last Train", the cool "Twilight" and "Road Shuffle", the slap-heavy Bill Haley style "Sea Devil" and the Neo-Swing of Black Cat". This is just a really fun and groovy album in a 60s spirit and while it's not a Twist album per se, the Gagarin Brothers (named after the famed astronaut) twist mend and bend genres to their full advantage. -GMB -Marc Bristol www.bluesuedenews.com
Hello Mr. Reyes. We went to the Musikmesse in Frankfurt Germany. I tried the Corona "Flaco Jimenez" at Hohner's stand. It was very nice. Nice sound, nice colour. WOW. The accordion is really TOP in each and every way, believe me! I hope I can get one. I gave Mr. Fausel your greetings. He returns his greetings to you. I gave my best at the Hohner stand and see there, Mr. Fausel invited me to play at Hohner's World Festival next October/November. I hope you and I have met before then. My husband loves ur accordians. I bought this accordian for him 11 years ago, and he doesn't play it. He only uses the 2 hohners. So since this one doesn't get played, I thought I would use it for the picture.
