Hoichi The Earless is an ongoing improvisatory dialogue between Marcel Blum & Jerrold Kavanagh.
Marcel Blum is a turntablist, computer musician, and software developer based in New York. He is the creator of the award-winning Soundplant sample-triggering software, has released experimental electronic music on the Perhaps Transparent, Maz Sound Tools, Free103Point9, and Tom Furgas Editions labels as well as in self-produced limited editions, and has performed at various NYC new music venues. Marcel received a degree in Media Study and English from SUNY Buffalo, where he studied with Tony Conrad, and is currently proprietor of keymap records, a virtual auction house specializing in early electronic and experimental music vinyl rarities. Marcel's music, sometimes released under the alias Signplant, involves the use of turntables, field recordings, obsolesced appliances, and realtime DSP, drawing influences from early tape music, 20th century classical, bebop and free jazz, hip-hop, and IDM. [Marcel is currently seeking forward-thinking composers who wish to explore composing for turntable as an instrument and/or incorporating the turntable into larger ensembles. If you are interested in adding to the small body of work for this unique and still relatively new instrument and are looking for an experimental turntablist to perform, consult, or collaborate with, please get in touch.]
Jerrold Kavanagh is a multi instrumentalist hailing from Staten Island, NY. Focusing on the drum set, he maintains an active performance schedule in the New York City area with ensembles of varying taste and style and has studied under a host of renowned players.
