With the perfect combination of rock passion, great groove, and exceptional vocal delivery, Holding Out's ability to appeal to the broadest of audiences seems to have no limit. Their music creates an atmosphere that makes audiences feel like they are a part of the show and leaves them wanting more.
Holding Out is a band of rock, pop, and blues influences combined with an incredible blend of powerful vocals. The band has two lead singers, both of whom also write songs for the group. Scott brings a soulful, blues-based style rock to the table, while Kelly brings in an acoustic, folk-style rock. When these two work together to combine their musical styles, something new is born, and it comes from the heart. Both leaders have an incredibly exciting and comfortable stage presence and their well-crafted, powerful vocal styles combine together to make natural and inspiring harmonies. Even Jen lends a hand with some background harmonies, giving the group a full vocal style that is a unique trait to have in their genre.
They have a sound that is appealing across many age groups; while many younger audience members love the excitement of the band members’ on-stage antics, older crowds are pulled in with powerful vocals and relatable lyrics. This band’s willingness to have fun while addressing the important issues of life and music is what makes their reach into different audiences so unique.
With their creative blend of musical styles and techniques, Holding Out is creating something new that people can really invest in. Their willingness to be honest and real through their music creates an atmosphere that makes audiences feel like they are a part of the show and leaves them wanting more.
One of the newest additions to the Portland scene, Holding Out is making a name for themselves in this incredible city of music. It would seem that their ability to appeal to the broadest of audiences has no limit. They continue to wow with every performance and their reputation as an excellent band to see live has continued to grow since the first time they stepped on stage.
* * * *
Holding Out was first formed in the summer of 2003 by the band’s two lead singers Scott and Kelly. Scott and Kelly first met briefly at summer camps in Central Oregon when they were young kids, but they were unexpectedly reunited when in 2000 Scott chose to attend Linfield College in McMinnville, Oregon, and 2 years later, Kelly unknowingly made that same decision. In the summer of 2003, they decided it would be fun to start a band together. Their very first gig was at the Crook County Fair in Prineville, Oregon, and after that show, Kelly and Scott immediately knew that they had found something special.
Over the next few years, the band played shows together whenever school schedules would allow, and their affection for playing music together grew.
In the summer of 2006, three years after the band played it’s very first gig, the group moved to Portland, OR with a determination to pursue the professional music scene there.
As they continued to play shows in the Portland community, Holding Out also recorded their first professional album at Kung Fu Bakery Recording. Produced by Tim Ellis, this album, titled ‘Playing in the Rain,’ has captured the excitement and emotion that Holding Out delivers in all their shows. Set to be released in April 2009, this album has long been awaited by Holding Out’s fans. Holding Out’s ‘Playing in the Rain’ is bound to have a great impact on the Portland-area, on the Northwest, and beyond.

If you haven’t heard this CD or seen them live, you are majorly missing out. These guys rock, and their musical ability is phenomenal. Both lead singers are strong and are able to cover a wide array of musical styles. They are definitely one of my favorite bands.
