Holger Czukay (pronounced Shoo-kai) was a founding member of Can, the avant-garde "rock" band that has been - and continues to be - one of the most influential groups in the history of modern music. His solo work and collaborations since Can continue to break new ground.
Holger is currently working on new material (watch the blog space above for updates).
EARLY HISTORY and CAN
Born in the Free City of Danzig, Germany (now Gdansk, Poland) on March 24, 1938, Holger's unconventional approach to music was apparent even from a young age. During his formative years studying to be a composer and conductor, his ideas were often considered too radical for mainstream tastes. The organizers of one jazz festival prevented him from participating due to his "unclassifiable music." Later, he was expelled from Berlin's Music Academy due to continued flouting of musical conventions.
Undeterred, Holger went on to study music composition under avant-garde composer Karlheinz Stockhausen and eventually went on to teach music himself.
Learning to play bass guitar, Holger Czukay teamed up with guitarist Michael Karoli (one of his students), fellow Stockhausen protégé Irmin Schmidt, drummer Jaki Liebezeit, and American flutist/electronic musician David Johnson to form Inner Space in 1968. The band was soon renamed Can.
Citing musical differences, Johnson left Can in 1969. By this time Can had added vocalist Malcom Mooney to its line-up and soon after released their first album - Monster Movie.
