Judith Owen and Harry Shearer’s Holiday Sing-Along began as a private affair—an annual gathering with family and friends in the couple’s Los Angeles home. In 2005, when the guest list had grown too long to hold the event at home, Owen and Shearer moved their Sing-Along to the Walt Disney Concert Hall, where they hosted and performed to acclaim with special guests including Van Dyke Parks, Richard Thompson, Keb’ Mo’, Julia Fordham, the Angeles Chorale Chamber Singers and others. The show has gone on to make highly successful premieres in other major U.S.cities, including New York, New Orleans, San Francisco and Seattle. Special guests have included The Bobs, Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw, Paul Shaffer and They Might Be Giants.
Judith Owen and Harry Shearer’s Holiday Sing-A-Long is an evening of music and mirth for Christmas lovers and Scrooges alike, a mix of traditional and non-traditional holiday music that is both reverent and irreverent. The show is musically anchored by pianist Brian Pezzone. Owen and Shearer both sing and perform—piano and bass, respectively. Special guests have included Julia Fordham, Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw, Paul Shaffer, The Bobs and They Might Be Giants.
Judith Owen is known for her sharp wit as well as her singular artistry as a singer and songwriter. The New York Times has said she “has the kind of wailing folk-jazz voice that slices away surfaces to touch vulnerable emotional nerve endings and leave you quivering.” Her newest album, Mopping Up Karma, is the best document yet of her manifold talents. The seeds of the album lie in a set of recordings that were going to be Owen’s major label debut when she was signed to Capitol ten years ago and nearly left to languish as the company’s presidency changed hands. She wrote and recorded the tracks with with the renowned producers Clifton Magness and Glen Ballard and now has substantially transformed them—newly recorded vocals, re-mixed tracks, and more—for the new album. Of the album, The Washington Post recently said, “Owen's voice is so lovely and soulful, even spellbinding at times, that she has no problem convincing us that looking over her shoulder is time well spent.” Courgette Records released the album as a CD to stores nationwide January 27.
Harry Shearer continues his multiple roles for a 20th season on The Simpsons, which he also reprised for The Simpsons Movie. His weekly radio series Le Show is heard in over 90 markets, and Shearer is a regular contributor to The Huffington Post. Shearer's recent comic novel Not Enough Indians was a national bestseller.
Shearer's recent albums Songs of the Bushmen (2008) and Songs Pointed and Pointless (2007) both received GRAMMY nominations for Best Comedy Album.
Shearer's film credits include Spinal Tap, Real Life, The Right Stuff, Portrait of a White Marriage, The Fisher King, Godzilla, The Truman Show, Small Soldiers, Dick and A Mighty Wind. In 2002 he wrote and directed his first feature film, Teddy Bears' Picnic. He has won two Cable Ace Awards. In July, 2007, Shearer plunged into the online video universe when the Harry Shearer Channel became a cornerstone of My Damn Channel, an entertainment
studio and new media platform specifically created to empower artists to co-produce, distribute and monetize original, episodic video content. Each week, a new political or pop culture satire written by and featuring Shearer is unveiled.
Theatrically, Shearer has collaborated with writer Tom Leopold and composer Peter Matz to create the book and lyrics for an original musical about J. Edgar Hoover simply called J. Edgar!: The Musical. The play premiered to sold out houses and critical raves at The Aspen Comedy Festival and is currently being developed as a film.
