Holland-Dozier-Holland composed many of the biggest hits of the 60's Golden Era of Soul, fueling the rise of Motown Records as a dominant and enduring music powerhouse with hits including "Where Did Our Love Go," "Baby Love," "Reach Out I'll Be There," "Standing in the Shadows of Love," "This Old Heart of Mine," "Nowhere to Run," "Stop In The Name Of Love," and many others. Brian recalls, "we produced gems for the Supremes, Junior Walker & the All Stars, the Four Tops, Martha & the Vandellas, the Isley Brothers, and the Temptations."
Around 1967 Eddie Holland departed Motown and established the Hot Wax Records and Invictus Records labels. In short order, an amazing stable of artists was assembled. Joined soon thereafter by Brian and Lamont, the trio's assault oin the charts continued unabated. Freda Payne, the Chairman of the Board, Laura Lee, 100 Proof (Aged in Soul), and the Honey Cone were among the acts that scored hits in the early '70s. "We also did outside productions for such artists as Dionne Warwick, Herb Alpert, Donnie and Marie Osmond, and Natalie cole," Brian further recalls.
Over the last several years our Invictus Records and Hot Wax Records catalogues have been extensively utilized by today's recording artists and producers through a recording technique known as "sampling." Sampling involves incorporating in some way, a portion of an existing recording into a new recording. Artists such as Common, Slim Thug, ODB, Usher, Cassidy, Kid Rock, Mary Mary, Fat Boy Slim, Rikki Lee, JC Chazes and others have posted some pretty decent hits this way with our recordings. For example, the video below of Mary Mary contains a sample of "Want Ads" by the Honey Cone.
