The songs posted are clients that for the most part we recorded, mixed and produced (or co-produced) from top to bottom. The current exception is that on the John Sullivan record, the drums and a few of the other instruments were recorded at Sabella Studios. The guitars, vocals and some other things were recorded here and the entire track (and album) was mixed and mastered here. Usually we'll be posting songs from our most recent clients but we will revolve some older client recordings as well.
BIOGRAPHY - ABOUT HOLLOW BODY STUDIOS:
Doug Kwartler, the owner and chief engineer of Hollow Body Studios, has been producing records in professional studios for over 10 years. That doesn't include the 3 or 4 years before that he spent toiling in his parent's basement with his Yamaha 4 - track cassette, his boss drum machine and his Shure Beta 2.0 mic, trying to replicate the sounds of his favorite artists.
Doug's first professional studio job was at Late Nite Studios in Plainview, NY in the mid to late 90's. Late Night was run by Kevin Kelly who during his stint at The Record Plant had worked with a host of well known musicians. Doug started out as an assistant and then took over as lead engineer as Kelly focused more on his burgeoning web design business. Late Nite boasted some notorious equipment, some of which came directly from The Record Plant. Kwartler was learning the trade on legendary equipment such as a vintage Neumann U87, a vintage Pultec EQ and a vintage Urei 1176 compressor.
While Doug was working with clients from all over the Long Island area, he had also formed his own band, Foundry, an alt.country outfit in the styles of Son Volt, The Jayhawks, Springsteen and Petty. Doug would soon record much of Foundry's first record, the highly acclaimeed "World Rattles 'Round" at Late Night.
During that recording process, Doug also began purchasing his own recording equipement. An Oktava MK-219 condenser Mic, some mid-level tube pre-amps, a couple of Adats and a Mackie 16 channel mixer. He would wind up recording a few songs in his second bedroom that made it to the record. Because of his attention to detail and his relentless persistance in "getting good sounds," Doug was able to acheive a similar level of recording quality and sound as the songs he recorded at Late Nite. He did this with lower level recording equipment, in an 10 x 12 bedroom.
He has recorded a vast array of artists from New York and the east coast.
EQUIPMENT / ABOUT
Hollow Body Studios (HBS) features the best in both vintage and modern recording gear. Our equipment list includes classic brand names linked to the greatest recorded albums. Names like Neumann, Neve, SSL, Universal Audio, Apogee.
HBS' list of vintage and modern microphones is almost unprecedented in a studio offering mid-level pricing. The flagship Neumann M149 tube mic has been used for countless major label releases. Paul Simon used it exclusively for his vocals on his record "You're the One." Ray Charles was also a user of the M149. Their Neumann UM57 (from the 60's) is considered a classic vocal microphone in the league of the Telefunken ELAM 251 and the venerable Neumann U47. Their vintage U87 (from 1977) is considered to be the most used microphone in major label recording history. Other mics include the legendary Shure SM81 (2), Neumann TLM-103, Shure SM7B, Rode NT4 stereo condenser, Rode NT1000, AKG D112, and an assortment of SM57's and 58's.
Pre amps include the SSL XLogic 4 channel mic pre-amp. These are the same pre-amps that are used in the most successful console in recording history, the SSL XL9000 K. Additionally, the Avalon AD2022 is considered to be a world class preamp used in the best studios. Our two Vintech pre amps / eq are Neve clones and are used by some of the most respected names in the business. The Universal Audio LA-610 captures the vintage tone vibe of the famous 610 pre-amp combined with the legendary compression of the LA-2A. We also have an Apogee Mini-me, which houses 2 world class pre's along with whats considered to be about the best Analog to Digital conversion out there.
Neve, neve, neve....We have two channels of authentic Rupert Neve compression with the addition of our Rupert Neve Designs Portico Compressor. It adds a sweetness to your sound ithat is indefinable.
We also have a host of world-class plug-ins including: Authentic SSL EQ and G-Series compression, Massey L2007 Limiter, analog delay, tape emulation, Bomb Factory's 1176 (BF76) and LA-2A compressors and more.
Take a listen to our song samples and see what you think. We think they're impressive at any level. But considering you're going to pay probably 1/2 (or less) at what you'd pay for at any major studio, we think they're mighty impressive.
