The spectacular HOLLYWOOD KLEZMER performs traditional klezmer with a unique fusion of Eastern European, American, Yiddish, Sephardic, jazz and classical sounds. From TV shows Beverly Hills 90210 (Season 5, Show #14, “Injustice for All”), Party of Five (Season 6, Show #13), The Chabad Telethon and KCET's Annual Holiday Celebration, to the Hollywood Bowl’s children’s concerts and West Hollywood’s Pacific Design Center, the ensemble thrills audiences of all ages. Each musician in the group is a star performer in his own right, plucked from the top Hollywood recording studios and international concert circuit. With its roots in Eastern European Jewish culture, this World Music group entertains, educates and uplifts audiences with its joyful celebration music.
Since the band's inception in 1993, producer/guitarist Jordan Charnofsky (Doctor of Musical Arts, USC) has managed and booked the band. Instruments which often comprise the band include guitar, flute, violin, clarinet, bass, trumpet, drums, percussion, and more. The group was formed in the summer of 1993 at the Brandeis-Bardin Institute in Simi Valley, California, where Jordan served as Musical Artist-in-Residence for nine years.
HOLLYWOOD KLEZMER is in top demand across the U.S.A. for concerts, celebrations and benefits at synagogues, universities, elderhostels and exclusive special events, including weddings and bar and bat mizvahs. The ensemble continually performs highly entertaining and educational concerts for people of all ages.
The members of HOLLYWOOD KLEZMER serve as ambassadors of Jewish culture by preserving and sharing authentic Old World Jewish music in a contemporary society. In addition to perpetuating traditional Yiddish culture, the musicians have created new works by incorporating the true klezmer roots of American jazz and swing into their repertoire. They also explore a myriad of World styles, making their collaboration a truly international Jewish music ensemble.
Based in Los Angeles, California, HOLLYWOOD KLEZMER is available in a variety of configurations for featured concerts and exclusive, private engagements anywhere in the world...from L.A. to Odessa! The group is available as a trio (guitar, double bass, and either clarinet or flute or violin), as a quartet (with the addition of drums or percussion), as a quintet (with the addition of another melodic instrument), and with a vocalist.
Major concert successes include performances for the 2000 Democratic National Convention Welcome Party at Paramount Studios, The Hadassah National Convention at the Century Plaza Hotel, the City of West Hollywood's "Summer Sounds" for the 13th continuous year in a row, The Playboy Jazz Festival Community Concerts, and The Knitting Factory Hollywood's Klezmer Sunday Brunches!
In March, 1999, Hollywood Klezmer gave the United States premiere performance of Sid Robinovitch's "Suite for Klezmer Band and Orchestra" with the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony. On Sunday, Dec. 2, 2001, Hollywood Klezmer was honored to give another highly successful featured performance of Sid Robinovitch's "Suite for Klezmer Band and Orchestra" with the Los Angeles Jewish Symphony.
